Screw the "muh children in the morning" argument.

Go to any school in the morning and you will see a line of cars a mile long waiting to drop off the little darlings.

Why not kill DST. Would rather have a little more dark in the heat of summer evenings
Because not everyone lives in Texas, believe it or not. 9:00 in the evening is the beautiful where I live. A great time to be outside.

I don't think that the clock saying xST instead of xDT will change the view at all.

Daylight Savings kills. Increased heart attacks, fatal auto accidents, deer strikes, etc. Here are a couple findings from a CU study...

Quote:

Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder studied the daylight saving time period (from 2002-2011) and found over 30 deaths annually (or 302 over the 10-year period) could have been caused by the DST change.

When daylight savings time ends, we lose an hour of afternoon sunlight. This may increase the likelihood of car accidents since more time is spent on the road in the darkness.

Studies have shown that more people are active during the evening. Without the added sunlight provided by daylight savings time, driver visibility is reduced, increasing the odds of a crash.

Adding an hour of sunlight in the evening year-round would save the lives of more than 170 pedestrians annually, according to a recent study in Accident Analysis and Prevention. The lives of nearly 200 vehicle occupants would also theoretically be saved by the change.

Some experts state that the abrupt time change that accompanies the start and end of daylight savings time leaves little time for people to adapt. As a result, drivers may still behave as if it's light outside even when it's dark. They may drive faster and, at the same time, pedestrians may be less attentive.

It takes about a week for most people to acclimate to the change in time and resume their normal levels of safe driving. Although we get an extra hour of sleep in the fall, this still results in changes in sleep patterns and behaviors, even leading to sleep-deprivation from the shift.

Martin Moore-Ede, a former professor at Harvard Medical School and an expert on driver fatigue, attributes the increase in accidents associated with daylight savings time to too many sleep-deprived drivers on the road at the same time. Studies have shown that drowsy driving impairs drivers to nearly the same extent as operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

That says the change back to Standard Time is what kills...

And for the morning drivers?

DST is the problem. Don't ever switch to it in the first place and you don't have to suffer when it ends.
I'd rather drive to work in the dark and get home to still have daylight in the evenings so I can be productive around my house.

Driving to work in the daylight and getting home after dark blows goats and is stupid.
Yep.

Most people do their activities AFTER work. Before work is just when they get ready for work and head to work.

Again, I said MOST people. Yes, there are the weirdos that get up at 0400 and run a half marathon, but the rest of us don't do that.

My 0.02 is really to pick a time and quit falling back or springing forward. Probably a poor choice of words in my original post.

The funny thing is that this was tried in the 1970s and people hated it.

I'd much rather see local time used. Eliminate time zones completely. Make it noon when the sun is at its zenith at your location.

not sure if serious it would make things like air travel hard coordinate

So you sleep through work and save your energy for stuff that's supposed to be done on the weekend?

Why would I want to do that?

0400 is for people working 3rd shift, people in the military, and people drinking way too late in New Orleans.

I would rather get home after work and then do whatever activities I'd like to do. Sometimes I go to the beach after work and relax. Sometimes I exercise, sometimes hang out in my back yard where I gaze at the canal and bull**** with the GF.

And do those things in daylight.

No. I wake up, get ready, and then go to work. Then I'm at work all day (awake, mind you). Why would I care if I'm doing that while it's dark outside?

And what stuff is supposed to be typically done on the weekend? Outdoor chores?

But it is time for the Forum 16 Semi-Annual Time Change *****fest.

I'll get mine out of the way first.

Make Daylight Savings Time the permanent and sole standard time.

Screw the "muh children in the morning" argument. Today's kids have turned into cave-dwelling hobbits with their heads permanently facing down to stare at their iphone. ipad, switch, whatnot 24x7, and spend most of their waking hours at home in the dark staring at these devices regardless of how much light there is in the morning or evening.

and... go.

Set your clocks back Sunday morning 2am.

This is easily the most sane, logical, and level headed thing ever posted on this forum.

The railroads are why standard time zones became a thing in the first place. It's easier to keep your Philadelphia-New York route on schedule when you don't have to set your watch forwards/back 5 minutes during the trip.

Yeah. With modern technology, that could be handled by the watch without intervention at all.

5 minute time zones would be nice.

How about an unintended consequence of the time change?

This was from a mailing list:
Quote:

A man in the northern German state of Schleswig-Hostein rather rubbed his eyes as a crate of letters was deposited at his doorstep. It was around 1700 letters from the tax office! All the ones he opened had the same contents: his login password for the online tax system, Elster.

The tax office says that the problem was the switch from daylight savings time back to standard time. The machine was in the process of printing one letter when the time changed, and it ended up reprinting and reprinting the same letter during the additional hour. Since everything is completely automated, the letters were put in envelopes and postage paid (a sum north of 1000 ) for the letters. The tax office offered to pick up and dispose of the collection, but the man said he could dispose of them himself.

So it was printing his letter at the time of the change and then printed it over and over again for an hour.
