Problem is that you are trying to solve for two things:

1. Daylight when school begins
2. More sunlight in the evening

You get #1 and #2 for nine months out of the year with Daylight Savings.

But for roughly three months of the year Daylight Savings fails on #1, so you have to switch to Standard Time.

If we didn't switch to Standard Time then school start and end times would probably just manually be shifted back an hour during the dark months by school admins, but it would be haphazard and vary by school or district. So might as well do it in a coordinated way.

I don't advocate for either option over the other, but I do advocate for picking one and sticking with it. Rolling the time back in the fall is tolerable, but springing forward in the spring sucks donkey balls.

Split the difference 30 minutes, tell Arizona that they have to get on board, and tell the rest of the world to kiss our collective backsides.

I was in elementary school in Wisconsin when daylight savings time was forced on the nation to "save energy".

It was horrible. Walking to school in the darkness and cold was uncomfortable and dangerous. At the high latitude sunset was still shortly after we got home.

Living in Texas, daylight savings time for the entire year would be great.

I believe that some states benefit from the time change whereas others have less benefit.

As such, I would prefer that the decision is left to each state. The federal government could argue that they control the time on the grounds of interstate commerce. However, since each state has a unique situation, the states should decide if the want permanent standard time, permanent daylight savings time, or change twice a year.

Ban DST and use Standard Time. Because it's "high noon", not "high 1 PM". Actually more like 2 PM in parts of West Texas.

I just don't see why this is an issue for people. Who cares? I bet the majority who complain never give a second thought to jumping in a plane and flying to another time zone.
