I want to reiterate that the size and scope of this disaster is simply unimaginable. It overwhelms any preparation or planning.

From a search and rescue/relief standpoint, the logistics are complete nightmare. The infrastructure is simply gone. You have homes and communities scattered throughout a very tough terrain on a good day.

Not ignoring the bad stuff going on and I certainly think more efforts and resources still need to come in. But, the public and private efforts going on here are fairly Herculean.

Crazy how the book "One Second After" was set in pretty much this same area (Asheville, Black Mountain etc) and now people are living out the "you're on your own" scenario, albeit not as a resul of EMP.

I have a former boss in Henderson County. He says they now have power, water, gas, groceries but signals (TV/Cell) are still down. He's 8 miles from Lake Lure and says the amount of devastation is incredible.

He lived in Houston for the last 30 years.

Wow that is an insane sat pic. A North Korean style dead zone to the north and south of I-85. A hundred miles to the west and it would have been far worse, as if it wasn't bad enough already. Thoughts and prayers and help for these poor people.

Real talk there are random neighborhoods up in the mountains all over that area for hundreds of square miles. With no power there's probably no way to even know where to send most of them.

Those people are probably stuck until the main roads are fixed.
I'm very familiar with the area so I get that it's challenging but I still see no reason that private citizens are using their helicopters to rescue people when the military effort seems lackluster at best. Maybe I'm just not seeing the dozens of military helicopters that are actually there?

The vast majority of people aren't exactly hidden in the mountains. The local, state and fed govt know where they live.

Great visual explanation of the heavy rains that had already been falling even before Helene moved inland. Those storm bands reached the full way up the East Coast states.

The Parkway is probably my favorite place on Earth, and I head up there every fall. I was thinking the Virginia portion might be open, but that is not what is important right now. Those resources are much better used to help with the recovery in North Carolina, outside the Parkway.

Tourism is the lifeblood up there, not just the fall but year-round. The recovery will happen, but it will take years.

They have regular access to free bottled water and ice now. One gas station is open several miles from them so folks are able to get gas for generators, etc. Cell service is up but no WiFi.

They are being told power may be restored by the middle of next week. Water may be 2 weeks to a month away. They do have natural gas. Folks are using gas fireplaces to cook.

One grocery store is open in their area and it is being supplied on a near constant basis. Basic food needs are no longer a problem.

He's optimistic. Neighbors and community really working together to get through this. Said this is a minor inconvenience for he and his wife compared to the areas outside of Asheville. Or, at least his area of Asheville.
not to minimize the suffering of any of these folks. BUT the one thing they have going for them as opposed to say a gulf coast town that has to deal with lack of power is they have relatively nice temps to deal with. High 70's during the day and high 50's at night is about the best you could hope for if you have to live without A/C.

Amen. It's the spirit and know-how that explored, tamed, and built this country. In times of trouble, it's often the capable individuals and groups in private sector that fix the immediate problems.

Government is slow and inefficient and it gets amplified in moments of crisis. A few Americans with talent, motivation, and tools can move mountains. Despite the left's best efforts to drive rugged individualism out of our culture, it's still there in flyover country.

I've seen similar in my own experiences doing disaster relief. It's disgusting and infuriating and lord have mercy on anyone that has functioning ears that asks me about the Red Cross or FEMA while intoxicated. I WILL find the closest soap box I promise.

So not only do I find this believable, I find it probable. If even a quarter of the hearsay of the stories coming out of the worst counties is true, I hope with everything I have, a massive and very public congressional investigation is launched immediately.
