I went to Google Maps, and dropped a the street view in a random place and viola, I got crumbling buildings, one visible broken window immediately, graffiti on buildings, and a street scape that looks like virtually every dense city core I've ever been to in the United States.

Being a tourist gives you an unrealistic impression of pretty much every place, especially those places that cultivate their appearance carefully.

That's certainly true to a degree, but usually I travel to the more exotic places with a group of around 30-40 and within that there are 3 of us close friends that go off on our own on these trips at night. No guard rails. We've Ubered at will all over Cairo, Moscow, St Petersburg, Zagreb, Cologne, Paris, etc. and sure, every city has good and bad areas, but the bottom line is that the public spaces are dramatically different in some cities vs the west. Train and bus stations, city squares, subways, government districts etc, I never felt any discomfort in many of those cities like I do in downtown Dallas at night. I can't imagine Chicago or Philadelphia or others here.

I imagine you'd feel a little differently if you were female roaming the city at night in Cairo.

I just listed Cairo as a random example of places we've visited for comparison and context. Trust me, I could go on and on about the bad aspects of Cairo. Almost comically so. The last night we were there we decided to Uber to a place to eat, then decided to walk back across the Nile by bridge a few miles away. I took pics and video on the way back so whoever found our bodies would know what happened to us. It was scary. Including but not limited to a pack of wild dogs and areas that seemed right out of Escape From New York. Also, there are large areas of Cairo that, as of 2019 when we went, still hadn't had basic services like trash pickup resume since the Muslim Brotherhood event in 2013 (?). Driving down the highway you'd see whole buildings literally full of trash. Parts of the city looked like 1945 Berlin.

you start by articulating a finite vision, one with the potential to benefit a massive cross section of people.
like a subway. and you pick an aesthetic based on what's best about the local landscape, non political,
Not named after a person or corporation, totally civic, no polarization or special interest groups. PSAs: anybody who effs this up is done-for.
So enforce that.

then you send 8 billion dollars less to ukraine to pay for it.. i'm a big picture guy.

Once again people are taking his point out of context.

He says his father was in Moscow a lot in the 80's and they barely had electricity. Now it's cleaner and safer than most U.S. cities. How did this happen? How did so many U.S. cities become such crime-filled dumps?

I don't follow Jack but this was shared with me earlier. There's certainly nothing in the US that compares to this aesthetic, which is what Tucker mentioned...

Our subways could look like that, but there's a huge difference between what can be built using conscripted labor, including artisans and fine craftsmen versus low-bid contracts using the cheapest labor, materials, and designs possible. US standards are: cheap, easy, and low-maintenance.

If you post something at lease be honest. Yeah maybe that was Moscow, in 1988. No way thats a modern photo for many reasons.

My guess at what happened, is that they abandoned an ideology where some poor schmuck in Astana, Kazakhstan was supposed to be exactly the same as a schmuck in Moscow for one where the wealth of the entire country is gathered by oligarchs into St Petersburg and Moscow...

Also, lots of places in the United States, especially city centers, are way better now than they were in the 1980s too, despite people in this thread acting like you cant go outside after dark in this country.

Hypothetical: would you feel safer walking around Moscow at night (you look like yourself, but nobody knows you're an American) or say the west side or south side of Chicago at night (you look just like yourself)?

I'm going with the unknown of Moscow because what will happen in Chi-Town is a given.

Times Square for starters. It's infinitely nicer now than it was just 30 years ago.

Thanks to Rudy. He cleaned up NYC.

Lived up there in the 70s. Times Sqare was all porn theaters, head shops, hookers and dealers on the streets. Not sure I even knew what a hooker was until we lived up there and I saw them proposition my Dad on the street.

Not to speak for the poster you replied to Hedge, but perhaps he was just making an observation? Nowhere did he state he wants America to be an ethnostate. Of course leftists like you see a white supremacist behind every bush, so you're just itching to throw that card down.

I figure most large cities in the United States are cesspools and are places I don't want to visit and certainly do not want to live in. I would guess large American cities have a higher percentage of riff raff and the underbelly and folks who are not going to follow the law nor be punished for failing to do so.

I thought the same thing about Singapore when I went there a couple of times in the 80's. Unbelievably clean and orderly for a big city.
We had our driver take us all over town there. He showed us the red light district where basically all the houses are for fornicating. Stopped and ate some durian and mangosteen in a shabby market.

I also stayed not far from the 4 Floors. Night time in that area was quite interesting with all the hookers and stuff.

Streets were clean though.

It was a cool city though. Not too many bad areas.

I've been to Moscow. It is just like any other big city. There's very nice areas and not so nice areas.

It has some beautiful churches and old architecture. Honestly, the Kremlin and Red square is weirdly impressive even though I kept picturing all the marching from the old black-and-white film. Even had lunch in a caf outside there.

But this idea that is something alien to our country now? Is ridiculous. Big modern plenty of cars. Plenty of stores Ritzy places, poor places.

And some of the other cities around there was amazing displays of wealth from the old palaces. I visited several of them. Just astonishing.

The people were interesting, older people were a little more skeptical and younger people were more open. They don't smile as much as we do here, smiling, or nodding, as you're walking down the street, but it's not because they're unpleasant.

They were just more suspicious of people smiling. I know that sounds really weird but I ran across it several times, and several guides even told us that. They think people walking and smiling and nodding at people means they're up to something.

Had several transactions with people, whether in stores or restaurants or such where they never smiled never really greeted you, but did help you.

I imagine, as time goes on that will change.

But it's not the archaic place people are picturing from the movies.

When I went to Paris for the first time about 1999 I was amazed how clean of a city it was at that time. Now we were in some of the nicer areas, so I'm sure if we had gotten out into more of the poor areas past driving by it may not have been, but I was amazed how clean the streets were.

Lately? lol.

One of the worst extranalities of the internet/social media is the deeper sides of both the left and right have dug their heels in and will spin any headline they can to fit their narrative, many of which are out of context.

I love this board but don't be naive and think this place is some champion of pure objective discussion or slant free.

Just wait till I get called a CM for voting for Trump twice. Being the head of my HSs "Young Republican Club" back in the mid to late 2000s. But down for Texas to legalize smoking trees and think it's okay for butt pirates to get married (not drag crap).

But yes, just lately, only lately we've seen rednecks jump on anything they can to run and post here before doing any critical thinking.

Never. Haha.

You missed the point....

America is multiethnic.....always has been. Race is not the issue.

The problem we experience today stems from moving away from a monocultural (American unique), monolingual multiethnic society into a multicultural, multilingual multiethnic society.

The move away from a monocultural, monolingual multiethnic society is destroying this nation. This creates destructive balkanization and loss of cohesion across this country.

Listen to the whole interview. His point about Moscow was actually about America and how we have let our cities decay by CHOICE. It's not our constitution that has caused it, it is rather our failed leadership. It does not have to be that way.

People should really listen to the whole interview and then make their judgments. He's not pro Russia, but antiwar and against America's direction, as many of us are as well.

I will repost.

His views are hardly propaganda - he's not part of a larger strategic effort to mind-warp people. Instead he has fairly unique anti-war and pro freedom of speech views. He's more of a one-off.

You can certainly disagree with him, but there is no audience clapping behind him making people believe they are stupid if they don't agree. You can just listen and decide, or you can choose to close your mind to it, but calling him a right wing propagandist is just not accurate as I see it.

I too have been to every single one of those cities. I have never felt safer in my life walking down the street in Singapore at 3am in the middle of Chinese New Year.
