Had my doctor cracking up last time when I was in, because right when he was done, I took out a little note from my pocket and asked him about two random drugs I had written down. He gave me a "WTF?" look, and I said "The commercial said I was supposed to ask my doctor about these drugs."

Every doctor I know, especially the GPs, hate the commercials. My good friend that is a GP told me over half his patients coming in for physicals and other routine exams are asking to get one or more drugs they have seen on TV. He especially loved the one that asked for Keytruda even though the woman didn't have and had never had cancer. She thought it would be a way to prevent it.

The drugs really get pushed when they get close to patent expiration. They are trying to protect their cash cows from generic competition. Once the generics are out for a few years, they tend to stop advertising.

Just remembered another, Trintellix. There are two commercials, one with a woman ordering an oat milk latte and another with a woman having a zoom meeting and then messing with laundry and her daughter yelling for her.

I see them at least 5 times a day if I have the TV on for more than a few hours.

And for some reason I think the woman in the commercial ordering the oat milk latte is really nice looking.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Anyone else sick and tired of the constant bombardment of drug company commercials? To me it's ridiculous all the commercials. Why are they bombarding us with commercials when it's the Drs duty to prescribe people drugs… even if someone thinks a certain drug may help them it's the Drs duty to give you a working drug for your condition

What the hell is this all about ? I have had 5-10 people ask me about this and I don't know the answer besides maybe money ?
This is actually one area where I am kind of in-favor of some regulation. Market to doctors...not to the general public, when a lot of the stuff you are marketing is addicting or alters brain chemistry, often times for the worse. The concept of advertising powerful drugs to the general public is just mind blowing, if you take a step back and think about it. Plus, the commercials are generally horrible.

Maybe a compromise...if you want to be able to market your powerful drugs direct to consumer? Make yourself open to legal recourse...for ALL drugs and vaccines (including Covid "vaccines").

I am with you which I hate to say because I am a massive free market guy but I think we are turning Americans into hypochondriacs with these commercials. If they have an issue, people need to see a doctor and they know what should help the patient.

My favorite is how every patient describes their condition as moderate to severe. As in, "I have moderate to severe _______, so I asked my doctor about Xyflugatrix!" Who the hell talks like that??

Yep. Also, to me, there is nothing "free market" about drugs (at least the highly addicting ones). I have gone back and forth with the concept of drug legalization...but let's be honest, this would create a ton of new addicts. The addictive nature of certain substances creates a warped/rigged game of "supply and demand".

I disagree vehemently with the libertarians who argue that drug use wouldn't increase with legalization. If you could buy pharmaceutical grade oxy/cocaine/meth/whatever at the liquor store...it would get a hold of a ton of people and they would no longer be operating as people with true "free will".

So many commercials with fat women with diabetes where the solution is never to lose weight, but to take drugs. People always look for the easy way out with the least impact on their vices.
And in those commercials... the vast majority of time is spent reading the warning label, while watching the (still) fat chick be the center of attention socially. It's the subliminal message they are sending of: Take this pill - lose a modest amount of weight - make friends/be successful.

Capitalism. They want you to ask for their product by name. And obviously its working....especially with Ozempic et al.
But I agree...Annoying as hell. I also detest any commercials about feminine products or sex related products.

I don't know how much legalization would change usage in the high school and college crowd. I was shocked when my daughter told me it was easier to get drugs than to get alcohol because the distributors had it on them at all times. She said she could get meth, weed, coke fentanyl or ecstasy (she said oxy isn't popular at her school) the a few minutes. She went to one of the best suburban schools. Fortunately, she never started down that dark path.

When I was in school, I knew stuff was available but I had no idea who to talk to.

Seems like these ads devote a majority of the spots on the side effects.

After they're done listing them all in double- or triple-speed speak... why would anyone consent to taking any of that ****?

Two other factors that haven't been mentioned:

1) Network television skews older, and older people take more drugs. So the drug companies go where their customers are.

2) There aren't a lot of media options that reach large audiences any more. So big advertisers are almost forced to use television.

Someone else mentioned that these ads work -- lots of people literally go to their doctor and "ask them about Tramlexia."

Only two countries in the world allow direct-to-consumer pharm advertising.

US and New Zealand.

And as a result, pharm owns the media.

The ads aren't really to get consumers to get the drugs.

The ads are to bribe the media to continue ignoring all of the terrible things pharm does and all the harm it causes.

This a brilliant deduction and makes perfect sense.

It is the law that if the commercial wants to tell you what the drug is for - it ALSO has to state the side effects.

That is why some commercials are just people being happy and then say ask your doctor about "polijhbnhh" without telling you what the drug is for. They don't want to list the side effects. I assume those are really bad. Lol

For some reason I always picture the people responsible for making these commercials are the ones who hail from the middle portion of the Eastern seaboard only... you know the type... white guilt, heavy use of pronouns, owns a SAAB or Volkswagen (hybrid of course), has a kid that plays lacrosse, Biden and BLM signs in their yard.

I did notice the latest Jardianz(?) commercial has a less fat woman in it. That first one that came out blatantly celebrated a morbidly obese woman dancing around like she was the epitome of health and the life of the party.

Utterly ridiculous.
