So going back to when this drama began in January, how much of it was specifically because of McCarthy? Was Gaetz specifically upset with him, or would he have focused his vitriol towards any of the senior GOP leadership in the House with a realistic chance of being Speaker?

Also, do you think he got it out of his system?
mccarthy brought this upon himself. he wanted the speakership so bad he promised the class clowns free puppies and all day recess to get it done. he can't act surprised now that he's been fired for failing to deliver on those promises, absurd as they were.

I generally dislike Matt Gaetz and don't care for his antics, but I think this is a fair assessment of McCarthy's speakership.

Not a fan of Gaetz either but MCarthy put himself in a hole. Back then when he offerred whatever it was to MTG and she was suddenly backing him, I had an eyeroll moment. Oh heavens, where is this going now? He's threading needle from the get-go but made it harder for himself with too many promises to too many people with divergent views.

That's exactly right. He wanted the job more than he wanted to be set up for success. I guess you call that unbridled ambition or something like that. Hopefully the new speaker doesn't sell his/her soul down the river just for the sake of the job. Make them come to you and plead for you to serve on your terms, not theirs. If they don't, let it pass.

Agreed with this. McCarthy was just as desperate for power as Gaetz is for attention and it came back to bite him. Hopefully the next guy doesn't need to make a bunch of impossible promises to get the position or we'll be right back here in a few months.

I think you are missing the point here.McCarthy made a deal with Pelosi (and by extension Hakeem Jefferies) that when he was challenged because he crawfished on his promises to his members to get the Speakership, that Pelosi and Jefferies would keep the Dems out of it and he would retain the Speaker position. He knew he was going to sell out on his promises.

But Pelosi as usual lied to him and brought the Dems to the game. He should have been smarter than that.

all McCarthy had to to was not walk out of a backroom with a Democrat deal that they came away happy with..

he knew that. we all knew that. Gaetz, as ******y as he is, specified this and McCarthy couldn't do it.

i mean Gaetz said. you'll get the votes initially if you agree to these terms. if you violate these terms, you're up for removal.

he blatantly violated those terms.

Gaetz is a moron. He's not trying to effect change in our country. He's being a useful idiot that the left will support. I was a fan of his in the past, but he doesn't have a plan other than to be a meme at this point.
I was debating which page 1 post to quote but I think you win. Congrats. I am not sure but I think he was a willing useful idiot, not just an ignorant one.

Gaetz got rid of a guy that was not living up to the promises he made to be a conservative.

Gaetz is NOT the problem. That more in the Party aren't like him IS the problem.

McCarthy is gone. That is good for conservatism.

The far left wing of the Democratic party lost me, and as shown by my posting here I'm definitely not MAGA on the other far wing. So as a CM, give me some Uniparty rather than the extremes.

If there are concessions and bilateral legislation I'd be pleased with that too.

McCarthy is butthurt and is going home knowing it's likely a seat that will go blue. He's resigned to try and get even for being ousted as speaker. Anyone thinking that a "real republican" will win that seat are going to be sorely disappointed. The descent people have left and are leaving California. This idiot Newsome just signed into law where stores will be fined $500 daily for every day they don't offer gender neutral toy options. With all the problems in California this is the focus. May the San Andreas fault giveaway and it tumbles into the Pacific Ocean

I don't care if he leaves. Good riddance, but if he ****s us over, getting more Democrats in there, he can go screw himself.

Meanwhile, even more worthless pieces of **** stay in Congress.

It is a very solid republican district.

They will not elect a Democrat. Though I assume the governor appoints a replacement in the meantime.

Governors only appoint someone to fill a Senate vacancy.

Newsom will have to call a special election to fill the seat. It will be empty until then.

So, we are relying on a Dem governor in NY and CA to call special election for the replacements of McCarthy and Santos.

Question: If neither side has a 218 majority, who is in charge?
TRM

Hochul has already set the election for NY-3 for February. Newsom didn't hold an election for the Duncan Hunter for 10 months even though he obligated by law to hold the election within 140 days of the vacancy.

For argument's sake, say prior to the 2024 elections the Ds get a clear majority in the house. What mechanism is in place to allow for the election of a new speaker?

Was wondering that myself. I remember the power shifting in the Senate in 2001 when Jim Jeffords changed his registration from GOP to Dem but that just meant the Minority Leader became the Majority Leader.

I don't remember a time when the balance of power changed in the House over vacancies while awaiting the results of special elections.

Anybody know?

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has announced his resignation, and Republicans are wincing at the long window before his seat is filled.

California law says the governor must schedule a special election for a U.S. House seat between 126 to 140 days after it is vacated.

That means the seat would remain vacant until near Memorial Day, with a general election likely on May 20, 2024.

First, California will conduct a nonpartisan blanket primary, in which the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, advance to the general election.
Jungle primary.

Quote:

The winner of the general election would be seated within days of victory.

The small window ties the hands of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), who would prefer to schedule the election later to keep the reliably Republican seat which Cook Political Report ranks R+14 vacant as long as possible.

Republicans will miss McCarthy's vote during marquee legislative battles of the first half of 2024. Foremost among those, the first deadline for funding the federal government is January 19, with the second deadline on February 2. Congress bifurcated a massive bill to continue government spending, leading to two deadlines weeks apart.

Congress may extend the current deadline to reauthorize Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Section 702 to a time within the window when the seat is vacant. That vote is expected to be contentious, with privacy advocates on both sides of the aisle calling for significant reforms.
McCarthy's announcement comes less than a week after the House expelled Rep. George Santos (R-NY) and ahead of the expected departure of Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH), who has been offered a lucrative university post.

After McCarthy's departure, the makeup of the House is projected to be 220 Republicans and 213 Democrats, giving Republicans little breathing room.
