Both sides dig in on this issue for fear of the other. This thread is evidence of that.
I don't think gun bans will solve much at this point. There are too many in circulation. That being said, guns do make it easier to kill other humans beings and is designed to kill (unlike a car). If guns magically disappeared tomorrow, would there be fewer homicides and suicides? Yes. That doesn't mean we will ever enact any law banning guns.
On the other side, the collapse of societal values, rising numbers of depressed and mentally ill individuals and rising crime rates in cities absolutely feed into this.
People on the right are afraid to admit that guns are dangerous because they feel that gives them an opening to be take away.
People on the left are afraid to admit that there are clear societal issues at work here, because they feel that would mean some of their own policies contributed to this.
Until we are able to have that conversation, these events will continue to happen more frequently and we will default to the same arguments.
