I don't recall how old I was, but once I overheard two neighborhood kids talk about "skipping" either "5th" or "6th." I just walked up on the conversation and had no idea what they were talking about but got it into my head that they meant school grades. After a few minutes of thinking about it, it became perfectly logical to me: I could skip (whichever one it was, I don't remember) the grade in question and excitedly told my mom (a school teacher). Of course, she told me that was ridiculous in spite of my explanations as to how much sense it made.

It was mere months (perhaps weeks) later that I realized:

1. I didn't even know if they were talking about school grades;
2. Whatever rationalization I used at the time wasn't based on what they were talking about anyway; and,
3. The so-called rationalization for skipping a grade never made any actual sense -- I was just excited about the prospect of not having to go to school for that year!

This is why you do not leave life altering decisions to children. Even children that you think might be of above-average intelligence. They have WELL below average maturity.

I remember when I used to think that Minnesota was a state of rugged folk for the winters they have to endure and outdoorsmen for all the lakes in the state. That state has really went off the rails. Used to think the same type of things about Canada and Australia too.

It's a delusional extension of the self esteem movement that had been throughly discredited by valid and sound peer reviewed study. It was based on conjecture, confirmation biased intuition, and junk science, as is much of the body of "academic work" in the humanities.

Children tend to thrive with clear structure and boundaries with room to explore ideas and create and learn while having that known structure to reassure them.

The open temperament hyper agreeable types are terrible at assessing risks and unintended consequences and like to run with intuitive or pleasing ideas, in often reckless and destructive fashion with self fueling good intentions.

A friend of mine who is divorced has a pre-teen who has been playing one parent off the other with a complex web of lies. They didn't know just how bad until they were able to put aside some of their differences and compare notes.
