Heating oil is in a tank usually underground and then goes straight to the furnace not circulating thru the house.

That's correct, but I've seen some variations on that. I stayed in log cabin in Southwest Montana a while and they had a wall mounted oil heater with the tank outside and the lines running through the wall..

My thoughts exactly about the others not waking up if they thought only 1 was unconscious. Did they maybe think the others were already up and left the house?

And the surveillance videos, should look for earlier. Possibly the perp got in the house and hid.

Also wondered why the couple only stayed at the frat party for an hour. What did they do between 9 pm and 1:00 am?

You're really wondering what a couple might have been doing when they snuck away for a few hours?

That's right, got them mixed up.

That is not always the case. I grew up in Connecticut where home heating oil was the norm, but basements were as well. In our case, as with my relatives, the home heating oil tank (500 gallon capacity), was in the basement.

Did you have the hot water baseboard type of heat? When we lived in Connecticut, both of our houses had that type of heat. Coming from central air and heat systems in Houston, the noises it made took a little getting used to.

My Mom said the house was "singing" at night.

Yes, I get it, but can't envision a scenario where it would ooze through a foundation. Ours was buried in the yard in New Jersey.

We had old fashioned iron radiators in our first home and baseboard heating in 2nd. The baseboard heaters would kind of click and ping when the heat came on, it was comforting in an odd way.

Best was putting your bath towel on the hot radiator while you showered!!!

These stats should put the heating oil theory to rest.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1231371/residential-heating-fuel-distribution-in-idaho/

a 1.3% chance that the home would be equipped with heating oil, likely less given the house has no basement, is on a decent slope, and no external tank visible that I can see. Plus the "leak" would be coming from the 2nd floor and you normally do not see, if ever, fuel oil furnaces on the 2nd floor and running around the exterior walls.

Evidently the source for the heating oil theory was a cop on twitter from NY. Others on the reddit, including first responder types, indicate the pattern of the blood and the fact that some of the "drips" coagulate before reaching the ground would also be more consistent with blood.

Believe this is the room with the girl w her boyfriend and 2 folks worth of blood, combined with hardwood floors, it being a second floor and older construction then this would almost certainly be blood.

Mostly relevant as to the indication of just how much blood was pooling in the house when the roommates were up and looking for their friends.

Towel warmers were standard appliances in England. Really, really needs to catch on in the US.

You nailed it.

The baseboard heaters were made out of cast iron. When I went off to A&M in 1975, a natural gas line was laid on our road and my parents converted to that for heat...but the baseboard heaters stayed. I learned at a very young age not to touch those...and I do remember the knocking in the lines when the heater was ignited.

I agree with you. As I recall, the oil company would perform annual inspections and I don't ever remember when we had a leak.

Having seen the pictures, that's blood, not oil. But I am also looking at that neighborhood and some of the interior pictures, stills taken from videos. Crappy construction, cheapest builder grade s*** possible designed for student housing being that close to campus.

Feel for the landlord. He or she will probably have to tear that down and build back. No one will rent that place again.

ETA: When a house is not properly caulked on an exterior wall, the sheetrock will absorb liquid until gravity takes over and the excess will go under and over the sill plate (also not properly caulked). That brings me back to the amount of blood in a human body on top of absorbent materials like bedding. Not a quick bloodletting. Carotid and other arteries only spurt as long as the heart is beating. After that, it pools within the body.

How much blood was intermingled here?

Blood from sources outside of the house and brought to the crime scene?

Nothing is making sense.

Forgive me if this is covered in this thread...I've been following this case closely in the news but just came across this thread here. I'll review it when I have time, but I have a question if anyone knows anything about this.

Has anything been said about an empty bedroom?

This is just my speculation, but I know it was a six bedroom place, with 2 bedrooms on each floor. The two on the bottom were the survivors. It is possible that the male was in his own room (old fashioned me would love to hear that) but knowing college students like I do leads me to believe he in the room with his girlfriend (and I'm sure those are the two that had defensive wounds, make sense.) The other two female were likely in rooms alone, but that leaves one bedroom unaccounted for.

Seems unlikely that a bedroom was unoccupied, every college student I know wants to maximize occupancy to minimize rent.

I don't know that this fact is important to cracking the case, but I do think it's curious that there is a good chance that there was another roommate who was not home, and that's not widely discussed.

Empty br was on the "right" side of the 2nd floor if you are looking at the back of the house. It's under the 3rd floor balcony and on the street side under foliage and against the hill slope. Early pics showed investigators looking at the window and the screen for the window on the ground. In addition to a potentially unlocked sliding patio door on that level, and you have some easy ingress / egress.

There is also a sliding patio door on the 3rd floor balcony leading into one of the girls rooms. I would think it's highly likely that door is left unlocked or lightly secured with just the door latch.

Another thing I have not scene mentioned here but that is noted on Reddit is that one of the girls was in the process of packing up and moving out.

Dont quote me but I believe there was previously another room mate but she had already moved out.

Also rumors I have heard/read is that there are photos in the spare room on the second floor with furniture in it so those were either the old room mate or one of the girls moved from downstairs. Also have heard rumors Kaylee might have been in Maddies room since she was moving out and her stuff was boxed up, also since they seemed to be together making calls that night.

There's been two other late night stabbing murders in the region since 2020. Both unsolved.

I don't understand how they can rule those and this out as far as being related.

"The attacks on the students and the Juettens both happened between 3 and 4 a.m. on the 13th of a month. Ladd was found dead in her bed on June 14, 2020."

That's a heck of a coincidence.

Also made clear that the red suspected substance visble on the outsde foundation could only come from a bedroom and not a mechanical closet with a oil tank in it.

Were I to gues, I'd say that house on the lower floors was cold as hell. Meaning people sleeping would have plenty of blankets and other noise muffling materials. Personally, I almost always sleep with ear plugs since I'm a light sleeper.

Maybe the lower floor roommates used something regularly that cut down on the noise since it was a party house?

Thanks, I did find that video. Very helpful and mostly answers my questions. I don't think the police statements completely square with that layout, but I'm not one of the "police are idiots" people and more of the mindset that they are very deliberate and intentional about what they are releasing.

They got nothing after 2 weeks if they had a person, they would release the info to the public to help find him or her...

Just sad situation all round.

You don't know that to be true. I suspect they have a great deal. They may or may not have a suspect. Whether or not they tell you and me about a suspect is determined by what that will do to the case. If releasing information helps, they will release it. If releasing it compromises the case, they will not, no matter the public pressure or ridicule.

Doesn't mean they won't make mistake, either. But I'd bet that this will eventually be solved.

the longer this drags out, the more intrigued I am by the connection to the other stabbing murders in the area. who was the last notable "textbook" serial killers to hit the US? In this day and age, it's so much harder to pull off. Hope they find this person soon and hoping we don't continue to see more headlines like this.

Did you watch the video? The lower (basement) floor room mates were not under any of the bedrooms.

Incorrect. There was a bedroom directly beneath the bedroom that was presumably Xana's on the second floor.

There were six bedrooms and five roommates as Ethan did not live there. One bedroom was empty.
