Should we be celebrating this? If so, why?
No. Its a bunch of small men enjoying the hypocrisy of someone that doesn't matter.

I'm not sure if people genuinely believe someone is going to say, "Wow, if some people say I'm a moron for not believing this, it clearly must be true."

It's not much a persuasive argument. It really just sounds like a bunch of miniature dachshunds barking because the first one one barked when it thought it heard something.

Biden can't free Griner and launder money at the same time.

What do you think he will choose?

You just don't know how close this country came to being overthrown by people charged with parading.

It's not the job of government to protect people from their own stupid mistakes. The government also has no business telling people what they can and cannot put in their own body.

I think what is missing in this discussion is WHY punishment is levied against violators. There are two primary reasons:

1 - Punish the violator for breaking the rule/law.
2 - Provide an element of deterrence to prevent other individuals from engaging in similar criminal activity in the future.
3 - Politics.

No doubt that #3 comes into play in this case. However, so does #2 - Russia made a statement with Griner, and it's being discussed around the world. "Break our laws, even if you don't agree with them, and you will pay a hefty price."

I know you won't agree with this, but it's lenient, "no harm, no foul" attitudes like this that have contributed to the decay of American society.

The drug trade, regardless of the derivative, has absolutely laid waste to countless victims.
And why do we have a "drug trade" that lays waste to countless victims? Because they are illegal!

These were vape carts, probably made and purchased legally somewhere you can do that.

It is not that he does not care it is that he has no influence whats so ever with Putin. Putin sees him as he saw Obama, an idiot, only older.

If Putin had one shred of respect for Biden as a leader, he would have never invaded Ukraine like he did.

I personally think weed is roughly on par with alcohol in regards to recreational drug use. It can be abused and some people have serious problems with it and become behaviorally if not chemically addicted to it. For most people it is much more moderate.

I think the punishment is ridiculous relative to the severity of the crime, but that's Russia's choice. They are sovereign over their own territory and can make their own laws, and people who travel there are subject to them. I made damn sure when I traveled overseas that I was discreet and followed laws, and didn't do anything that would typically violate a law I might not know about.
I suspect a Russian citizen convicted of doing something similar would not face as long a sentence unless there were a political angle. Just as with this case.

Anyone know what Britney can expect in the Penal Colony? Do they require hard labor or is it similar to our prisons? Is she going to have to fight in an underground MMA prison league and thereby win her freedom while inspiring her fellow prisoners to get rid of their corrupt prison wardens??

Some people have to learn lessons the hard way. For Griner she acted as though she was oppressed and disrespected her country that allowed her to live her life how she wanted to and say what she wanted to as she got a free college education and was paid well to play a game. After that game she would no doubt still have many opportunities to work and live a well based on that time playing. Yet she decried her country and disrespected our flag and national anthem.

So she went to Russia to make extra money and decided to break their law in regards to drugs and was so brazen she had drugs getting on a plane. She likely assumed her celebrity status would protect her if she got caught and the opposite occurred. That's what happens in places like Russia that DGAF about individual freedom.

I don't like to see any person suffer but unfortunately suffering to learn a lesson is part of growth. She is going to face a crossroads. She can either shrivel up and be filled with anger or she can accept the consequences of her actions and learn to appreciate life and freedom so that when she is released she will live her life differently. Up to her but I sincerely hope she chooses the latter. Maybe spending some time with people that can't even fathom the life she had in the US (and will have again whereas they never will) might change her perspective.

Life is hard and unfair and Griner has had far more than her share of good fortune and God given gifts. I don't wish her pain but every challenge creates an opportunity should we choose to learn from it.

You're the one with the dumb take. It's their country. There is an old saying, "When in Rome...."

If you don't want to adhere to it, then don't go.

Otherwise, your only option to counter what you see as an immoral law is to invade and conquer a sovereign country.

I go to Brazil all the time, and I guarantee you that if you break their laws, your American priveledged ass (talking to you Mr. Griner) would never break another law again.

Break the law in America you can play the victim card.....break the law in another country you have just become a ***** in their prison.
