The presiding judge said the verdict was upheld "without changes" except for the counting of time served in pre-trial detention as part of the sentence. Griner is now expected to be moved to a penal colony.

A friend of mine is Lithuanian and his dad was born in a gulag in the 50s. His grandparents lived there for decades and basically just lived out their life as if it was like a resettlement camp rather than prison per se.

I am not saying it is club med, but maybe she will meet a nice Russian gal to settle down with.

Couldn't disagree more. When you go to another country, you follow their rules. If you disagree with them, don't go to their country. If you think you could be a target in a country that doesn't like the U.S., (Iran, China, Russia, etc), you shouldn't go or you better watch what you do.

I know libs enjoy breaking the law over here and face no consequences, but in other countries, you aren't f'ing special anymore. You get treated like a conservative in the U.S. Don't like it? Don't go!

Good grief. It is impossible to eliminate negative externalities.

Even if everyone who drank alcohol and/or did drugs never did either outside of their own home, yes, there would still be negative effects.

Your argument that all should be banned because we cannot have perfection is a bad one because it is not grounded in reality. Reality is that if, at least weed, were decriminalized, there would be a lot fewer people sitting in jail just because they wanted to get loaded differently than someone who got drunk.

There is no such thing as a perfect solution, but reducing petty crimes for things people do in their own homes that do not directly affect the liberties of others is a good idea.

I don't really have a problem with harmful drugs being illegal. At least illegal to manufacture or sell. Marijuana doesn't fall into that category.

If someone gets pulled over or searched and "possesses" marijuana (or even cocaine or somesuch), there is no reason to throw that person in jail. They haven't harmed anyone.

Hopefully it will be a similar tale to the prodigal son. Somebody who wasn't grateful for living in the only country in the world that allowed her to live her life the way she wanted yet didn't show an ounce of appreciation for it. You are overshooting the target. I never suggested any absolutes on drug laws nor any perfect solution. My reply was directed at the comment that suggested the only reason there is there is social damage is because there are laws against the use of drugs. This is absurdly not true as the example of alcohol.

Whether or not laws are strict or relaxed has a debatable effect on what the use of drugs does to people and their communities other than affect the numbers of drug users that may be on the streets causing harm.

Now, having said that, Britney did indeed violate the laws of Russia, and "she" is getting the punishment for it. None of us travelling to another country should expect to have our American laws follow, and our opinion on another country's laws does matter one bit.
