I have no issue with the US trying to get her sent back to the US as they should with every citizen. There are limits on that though. She is guilty of the crime she is accused of and the crime she committed had nothing to do with the US government (it's not like she was on a spy mission or was an ambassador). She just was incredibly stupid to not only be doing drugs in Russia but to take them to the airport. I'd certainly be fine with us asking for her to be sent back to the US but not at the expense of a prisoner trade unless it was a comparable criminal, ie some non political Russian who was busted for a minor drug offense. Like for like.

You can point to the ASAP Rocky thing with Trump but that was a very different situation. Guilt was far less obvious. There was no offer of trading a major criminal for him. The country in question was Sweden which we have strong ties to and are on friendly terms with. Essentially Trump was just asking for a favor not a trade or quid pro quo. If Biden wants to call up Vlad and ask him pretty please to let Griner go I'm fine with that but it isn't likely to work.

TLDR, Griner is an idiot and that isn't our problem, this was a problem completely of her own creation. The fact she hates her own country that has made her rich is irrelevant.

Is the sentencing being announced today or is that a separate hearing?

Indeed, the white, male, beloved American who taught school in Russia for years was sentenced in Feb. to 14 years and literally no one made a peep about it being unfair. He's also still not on the list of people to be included in any potential prisoner swap - just going to leave him there I guess.

You go to other countries, you have to abide by their laws no matter how rdiculous they are by our standards....You don't, escpecially as an American in a country like Russia, you pay the consequences, I am sorry but this is on him/her.....

It would be funny if Trump was involved. Yet, we know that if Trump was president right now that they would claim he's racist by not getting her out of jail yet they don't do that with Biden.

And death by execution in certain ME countries for comparable infractions seems excessive...that's why you don't flagrantly break their laws. That's why most smart people don't even go to these crazy countries.

She was playing on a Russian basketball league. You know the WNBA people only make about $250,000 a year and apparently they can't live on that.

Griner deserves every day of her sentence. As a previous poster mentioned, athletes get preferential treatment simply for playing a f***ing game. They're used to it.

If Trump was President it would be a completely different situation because if Trump was President there would likely never have been a war in Ukraine. He would not have green lighted Nordstream and Putin actually feared Trump because he knew Trump had no hesitation in hitting him in the nuts at any given time. The reason we got in this mess is because of weakness and confused foreign policy that we continue to project.

We are doing a rinse and repeat right now with Taiwan. You have Pelosi going to Taiwan, then not, then going. Then you have the WH saying they don't want her to go but then she can go but they don't really support her but they can't stop her (even though she is in the same Party as the President and the President has control over Foreign Policy). All that does to folks like Xi is show we are divided and confused and they see that as an opportunity to take advantage of, even though China will almost certainly fail if they decide to invade Taiwan and everyone will lose just as everyone is losing in Ukraine outside of the grifters.

Don't like her stupidity and her actions.
Don't really like the fact that she is an American citizen. However, she is an American citizen and as such, she deserves all the help we can offer to get out safely.
