This is an amazing pickle for the Admin. There is no justifiable reason to trade anyone of significance to get Griner back. She is guilty and she was stupid by messing around with drugs in a country like Russia as tensions were high. Sucks for her but she is the only one responsible. The arrest wasn't directly political nor is the conviction, you do not mess around with drugs in foreign countries that are not friendly with the US.

Still if they let her rot it will make Dems eyes bleed. Griner checks so many of the right boxes as a black LBGTQ player in the WNBA that loves to protest the US.

Then there is the inevitable backlash of folks in the US who are in prison right now and their sympathizers.

It will suck if we let a scumbag gun runner off but must admit I'm enjoying the popcorn.

This admin has it easier than prior would. If they must, they can tell the MSM to just start emphasizing another story. Remember, they have some degree of control of the narrative. Short-attention spans and scan coverage will do the rest.

I'd like to point out that the only reason the country is in an uproar about getting her* back is because she's a black, gay progressive. Imagine someone similar from the opposite side of the spectrum, say Steve Bannon, was locked up for the same offense. There wouldn't be a ****ing peep. In fact, they'd celebrate his demise.

In short, this has absolutely nothing to do with patriotism or being an American or any of that. Like everything else, it's 100% political.

I don't think it's 100%. Griner's problem is they have made it clear they hate the country and they broke the law in a foreign country. Americans aren't compelled to over look the latter because of the former.

If this was Joey Jones who served in the military and lost his legs doing so, Americans might be more willing to overlook the legal issue.

At least that's my take on the situation. I would like to get the other guy whose name I can't remember because he has been an afterthought add-on to Griner home. I believe he is a red-blooded American who is being held as a political prisoner. Griner is an America-hating person who broke the law. All the difference in the world, to me.

True enough, the schadenfreude is political....because Griner was so spectacularly wrong about the "oppression" in America.

The class thing is different, though. Her biggest supporters were saying things like, "If it was LeBron, they'd be back already." Perhaps.....but if it were any non-celeb or any one of us here on F16 we, too, would stay in that Russian cell. Why should Griner rate above anyone else? That she actually did what she is accused of is not even in doubt. If she is a victim of anything it is actually the "reverse oppression" that these athletes get from the time they get noticed in High School where deferral and letting things slide are the norm for them.
