But I can open my own jar and don't have to call AAA or ask my wife to break a lugnut free on a tire because I have muscle, so there's that.

Most guys in WWII who came from the Depression from families who worked on farms in the dust bowl were like that. Yes it's underweight but those same guys carried 100 lbs of military gear for years so clearly it wasn't that dangerous or unhealthy.

Fitted is short for slim fit as more and more clothes cater to fat asses now... So what used to be the normal fitting clothes are now labeled slim fit or fitted and the clothes for the obese are now called regular or relaxed fit. FYI

Some of you people are ****ing ridiculous. BMI is one measurement. Only dumb**** trash tabloid media and smart asses like you treat it as some singular metric of health that has "flaws".

For most individuals, it's good enough on an individual basis to ask further questions about whether a person is in decent health or not. If you're some kind of star athlete, you have your answer. Same is true for a couch potato that is skinny because she barely eats between cigarettes and drinking binges. On a population level, it's a damn fine generalization because your borderlines are too few to matter that much. The sharp rise in the last 40 years is in obesity, and it's not because we all became chiseled gods.

So much of stupid American discourse, on all sides, is because of half wits popping off with their funfact outlier just to confuse an issue that's real.
Easy there…don't give yourself a coronary over a discussion. Stress is another factor in heart disease

Actually, if you watch shows like Leave it to Beaver, Bewitched, My Three Sons, etc. where the men are almost always in a suit, you'd notice they don't wear the kind of fitted suites many men do today. They look more comfortable while still tailored. Most "fitted" suits today make men look more like Peewee Herman or like they bought the suit 10-15 pounds ago rather than a classically put together professional. I'm willing to bet "fitted" suits will one day be looked back upon like we do mullets, parachute pants, and shoulder pads: sometimes brought back intentionally but more often ironically and almost always leave people wondering why it was ever considered fashionable in the first place.

This bears repeating. The car-centric way that our cities have been built forces people to drive for everything, and it takes more of an effort to walk. Most streets are dangerous for pedestrians because of the way they have designed.

Yes and no.

Not talking skinny jeans. If you're familiar with Brooks Brothers suits, there are three fits. Milano (slim fit), Regent (Reg-too big for me) and Madison for SOG.

I doubt BB Milano will be looked upon as likes of mullets, parachute pants and shoulder padded jackets.

Sounds like a great reason to make sure people pay for their own health care rather than have it subsidized by their fellow citizens. Make them incur the true cost of their choices.

The annoying thing about BMI being a ****ty metric is insurance companies use it to set premiums. Doesn't matter if you are in good shape or a fat slob, if your height/weight are what BMI says is "bad", you pay more.

Like others have said, yes we are very fat but BMI has always been a joke for me personally. At 6'1", I'm in the "healthy" range at 140-185 lbs. If I weighed 140, I would be confined to a hospital bed. At 18 years old In high-school, I weighed 185 and was thin as a twig. Anything under 200 and I promise you I am in a healthy weight range, but bmi would still call me rather overweight.

But that's not a bad thing, anyway.. To have that warning flag pop up when get closer to edges of acceptable healthy weight... I went to the doctor and saw on the computer screen I was considered "overweight".. At 6'3.. 210... (the gutless obese doc didnt tell me it, but I saw it on the screen)..

Could I have justified myself as still healthy? Sure (always have lifted some on and off) .. But instead I used that as motivation to get in better shape... 5 - 6 years later and I've dropped / kept off 35 pounds.. Daily exercise and paying attention just a little better to what I eat. It's not complicated. Now in best shape of my life at 40.

BMI is a reliable marker in the vast majority of people. Yes it becomes unreliable at the extremes of height and muscle mass (and a few other extremes), but most people do not fall into those categories.

The reality is that if you're posting in this thread and your BMI is 35, you aren't Lebron James. You're probably just fat. Many modern Americans just simply don't realize what a normal human body is supposed to look like historically.

Go look at pictures of American soldiers in WW2, you'll find yourself thinking "man these guys look underweight". Except they're not.

The average size of an American soldier during WW2 at the time of deployment was 5'8", 144 pounds. The average weight of a 6'1" soldier was 166 pounds. My grandfather was 6'2" 180 pounds and was by far the largest appearing man in every photo there is of him from that time period in his life. I mean his size really stood out.

Now that being said you aren't obese at 6'1" until you hit around 220 pounds. But a "normal" weight for a man that height historically is between 160 and 180 pounds.

The average western adult today doesn't have any comprehension of what "normal" is, that's the point.

Our physiology has developed over the millions of years of primate evolution that preceded the excesses of the latter half of the 20th century. Our bodies have evolved such that physiologically healthy weights are what most today consider too skinny.

If you are 6'0", 140-150 in high school today you'll get called skinny. Nobody thought that in 1940, or at any previous point in human history.

So a 5-star SEC linebacker (or hell, even a safety) in peak physical shape is really obese? BMI is garbage. Or at least our outdated and over simplified ways of measuring it are.

Myles Garrett must only have weeks to live, if BMI is accurate…

Myles Garrett falls into the top 0.1% of humans in terms of body fat % and muscle mass.

Yours is a completely irrelevant point. It's like arguing 5'9" isn't a normal height because Yao Ming exists.
