My dad was a high-ranking admin in TDCJ for many years, and participated in countless searches. To refer back to Gurule in 98, they set up the perimeter as soon as the alarm was sounded. They searched every house, RV, meth shed, culvert, etc for miles around.
Riverside obviously isn't as densely forested as Leon County, but there are a gazillion places he could hide. I posted earlier about Gurule being found floating in Harmon Creek - that creek had been searched several times before his body floated into sight.
Like a previous poster said, he's either hiding in the perimeter, or the cartel picked him up.
TDCJ has a pretty great record of capturing escapees, despite the fact they were able to bust out in the first place.
I am pretty curious as to how he was able to free himself of the cuffs and shackles. I have known the CO at the back of the bus (the one who wasn't stabbed) since I was about seven years old. He isn't a spring chicken; about 60-65 years old. I think it's curious that he was the only CO besides the driver, responsible for security. I don't know the demos of the other offenders, and my understanding is this was a transport for medical treatment, so probably not considered as high security as others might beā¦but it's odd.
All that being said, TDCJ has slid downhill in terms of management and effectiveness in the last few years, so maybe that's just the norm now.
