Agree. Might be a good chance for your son to develop some tolerance. And practice that Christian learning you mentioned.
Ask the militant liberal gay roommate about his tolerance toward Christian values.

There's now a Reddit thread about it. People here don't realize how small minded and bigoted they come across to anyone outside the f16 echo chamber.

I don't care what op's son does but some of the replies immediately assuming the roommate is going to go full gay mafia on him are ****ing stupid and embarrassing. You seem to think the guy needs a safe space just like the far left liberals do.

Not everyone at A&M is a good old boy with a corps haircut who goes to church 12 times a week and attends Trump rallies. And apparently a bunch of grown ass men need a reminder that college is a place you meet people who aren't like you.

Had a chance to talk to my kid. Bottom line is that the roommate situation made them very uncomfortable so they wanted out.

Kid had already decided to pursue another roommate. Had already taken the action to email housing services, on their own accord. Kid also proactively connected with other incoming freshman via social media and has found someone who may be a better fit. The email sent to housing services did not mention concerns at all about the roommate. It was entirely focused on asking if moving to a different dorm was an option - the dorm where a better fit was already assigned.

So, overall, I'm proud that the kid did all of this on their own accord. We aren't helicopter parents by any means, but our job as parents is to use discernment to help our kid navigate this world and avoid potentially disastrous situations.

Thanks for the advice everyone. There was some posts that did make me pause and think differently. And, there was a bunch of BS posted too but that was expected.
Congrats Cinch, you and your wife have reared an adult.

One of my roommates at A&M had a traumatic experience with one of his dorm roommates before we met. The concern is definitely warranted.

Meeting and interacting with others that are different than you is one thing.

Living with someone where the situation is incompatible is COMPLETELY different.

I think some folks on here have never had roommates before...

This may or may not be the time for your young adult to do it but remember that your child's identity should be a son or daughter of Christ. That is all. Not a straight, gay, black, white. Son or daughter of Christ. The Holy Spirit will take care of the rest. It will be an invite only and you don't have to force anything. Jesus said to repent and turn from your ways in order to follow Him. He didn't force it. Bear fruits of the Spirit and serve an invitation. It's then their choice. You have then done what you are called to do.

And you probably started it.

All you leftists just cannot stand that people don't agree with you, fall in line when you demand it, and in many cases, simply do not like you at all.

Put them in an off campus apartment. I lived on campus at tamu freshman year and it was by far my least favorite housing experience in my 4 years there. I have no idea why there is such an obsession to have your kid live on campus freshman year. You'll "learn" the campus just as well living off campus, and living off campus gives you much better value for your $$$.

For me, it isn't about learning the campus. I have several that have gone different places.

It is about meeting people, developing relationships, and getting involved.

I have one that wants a Community style dorm, as opposed to the Suite style because he is concerned kids today will shutter themselves in with their gaming console and it will be difficult to meet people.
You can easily meet people living off campus...... living off campus won't prevent you from going to parties or social events lol

What would you do?

Child is a senior going to college several hours away from home. No one from high school attending the same college, so child gets assigned a roommate by the University.

Child finally finds assigned roommate on social media. Apparently, based on posts, assigned roommate is gay and apparently militantly liberal.

My child has been raised in a conservative Christian home and holds conservative values.

Is this an untenable situation where we should urgently seek a roommate change or find a new living situation? Or am I overreacting?

That sounds like a f-ing nightmare. Do whatever you can to get them out of that very unfortunate predicament.

College is where the next 40 years of their life is going to be decided. That's too important to live with someone mentally ill. Too much risk with too much riding on it.

Your child is going to have to learn to deal with people that aren't like them, and will share little or no commonalities. It's called growing up and being an adult. His roommate will likely be going through the same thing. Unless it becomes untenable because of pressure from the roommate to do certain things that makes him uncomfortable, you should let them figure it out on their own. That's another thing that's called being an adult.

I am a grown up adult. Part of that is staying far away from militant liberals who hate me and my country and will not listen to logic reason. It's just best not to befriend devout liberals. Avoiding them is very smart and mature.

The "just be open minded and try to learn from them and broaden your horizons" kumbaya nonsense is stupid and naive.

I wonder if the roommate has ever had a positive relationship with a real Christian? The Bible tells us to love one another. This could be a great opportunity for your child, it could be a challenge. It could be both.
The biggest problem that Christians have relating to homosexuals is the fact that homosexuals often cannot separate action from person. We believe homosexuality is a sin, something God condemns and will send someone to hell for. The latter of course is true for all sin and in God's eyes we're all sinners regardless of which sins we commit. It is the old adage, "love the sinner, hate the sin."

If I ask you this question, "what are you?" how will you answer?

You might say I'm an American, a Texan, a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, a grandfather, etc. etc. etc.

If you ask a homosexual that question, almost every single time the answer is "I'm a gay man" or "I'm a lesbian." They define their existence by whom they have sex with beyond anything else, therefore they see hating sinful actions they engage in as hating them as a person.

Of course not all do and can understand people do not hate them because they do not agree with or approve of their lifestyle. Those are the ones who just go about their lives like most other people, where the ones who don't scream 24/7 about how horrible Christians are, how mean they are to homosexuals, and rant and rave online about just how bad they have it in their mind.
This is nonsense and justification for your Christian "overemphasis" (to use a polite word for what it really is) of this particular sin in your belief system.

No it doesn't

This " tolerate" BS has been pushed on conservative Americans for years to the point of if we reject it we're the problem.

Some of us still have Christian values and don't want to surround ourselves with those that don't.

So no, no way in hell my son would be living with a gay roommate.

So you don't like gay people?

So don't let him be a student athlete, a guy in the Corps of Cadets, a member of a fraternity or any other male-based or student organization, a member of Student Government, a credible, academic study group, the church (yep, I said it), or any other group affiliated with the University. There are gays EVERYWHERE, folks. EVERYWHERE. They're every occupation in EVERY facet of life. Among those people are the staunchest Conservatives, Republicans, hard working, taxpaying, country-loving, and … yes … faithful people who open up the Good Book and treat people the way we are commanded to do rather than closing it up and beating people over the head with it. Some of you who use your faith as a weapon are so antithetical to what the Bible commands. Did you ever think about that? Haters gonna hate. Love people, people. It seems as if some of you are loving yourselves first … and certainly before you love your neighbor. I never really expected this kind of attitude conduct out of Aggies. Vigorously disagree, but don't do it so disrespectfully.

Gays are 2-3% of the total population. No they really aren't. I don't know any gay people in real life outside of a few I work with. It is very easy to avoid them if I have no desire to see them at any point in time.

I'm sort of shocked that in 2022 there are still this many people that think gay people just want to "live and let live", so being this person's roommate is no big deal.

It's like you've closed your eyes for the last 20 years of exactly where this "movement" has gone and is going.

Do yourself a favor and turn on any kids cartoon channel, attend a school board meeting or just check out the local reading list in your kids library. Then tell me you don't think militant liberals are trying to violently force feed their radical belief system in everyone.

Tolerance and coexistence was never really the goal, that was a lie that has been emphatically exposed.

It's like these people have ignored what has happened the last 7 years where anyone not toeing the line has been doxxed and had their lives ruined. Why interact with these people more than is necessary? It's insane and I am convinced that those who are pushing for it either want to convert the kid to far left beliefs or support grooming, there is no other valid explanation given the past decade of bull*****
