Normally have to sink a naval vessel to destroy something that expensive. I wonder if the genius that authorized this system's use has fallen out of a window yet?

Nope. Nothing but a made up excuse to grab people and resources to slow a dying, mismanaged Russia.

Exactly. Much like Hitler did, Putin is just deciding what he wants to control and then making up whatever excuse he needs to justify it. The only reasoning we should listen to is the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians that voted to be independent from Russia in 1991. They are (or were) a free country that does not want to live as a Russian vassal a la Belarus. We should be defending them and standing up for our word that we gave them when they gave up their nukes. What we have done so far is give them just enough to keep them from losing.

"There is no more money to provide military assistance to Ukraine, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters Wednesday. "We have given now Ukraine the last security assistance package that we have funds to support right before New Year's, right after Christmas," said Kirby."

Not the first expensive AF radar they've lost. The Ukrainians have destroyed a bunch of surveillance radars and a few tracking/targeting radars for the S300's and S400's. Honestly, the replacement cost of losses for Russia must be staggering.

It is mind boggling why they keep pressing forward. It will take a decade or more of very elevated military spending just to recover from their equipment losses. And they're not that far from half a million dead or wounded beyond the capacity to serve military personnel. They will easily reach that number this year if the trends continue. Their population profile can't sustain those losses long term.

Missile expenditures, too. Putin isn't buying reloads from Iran just because he wants to.

It's insanity in action and a great reminder that we haven't come that far as a species in the past 80 years.

Their excuses about Ukraine being Nazis and all this other crap is just propaganda bs. Russia is run by paranoid nationalists who have been trained from birth to be paranoid about invasion considering the long Russian history of being invaded. Most of western Russia is just flat ground straight to moscow.

Their ultimate goal at the outset was to secure the eastern side of the Carpathians. Ukraine was in the way. Moldova is the real prize. If they control the Black Sea coast and the eastern Carpathians then they don't have to worry about placing too many defensive resources there because the geography is just not suitable for invasion from the west there.

Then they can move more of their limited defensive resources along the border with Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Ideally for them, they would take those three countries to form a land bridge to Kaliningrad and create a much narrower path for opposing forces should they choose to invade across the northern European plain. There's no doubt Putin would have already done so were it not for NATO. That's why they are so pissy about NATO encroaching so close to Russian territory.

That would be a pretty big score. Although not sure if it benefits Ukraine since they have been pretty incompetent and there is a possibility someone better could take over.

It's yet another of many "Thanks, Vlad" lessons-learned and is the motivation behind the Army embarking on a massive expansion and modernization of its IAD systems, combined with multi-year contracts to deepen missile stocks.

Presumably we wouldn't be playing purely defense. Ukraine is in the unenviable position of just soaking up attacks while Russia can launch them largely with impunity

Yep, the best air defense is a preemptive offensive air campaign, and we have the finest air force on the planet.

Yes this… we wouLd be taking it to their ass so hard they probably wouldn't be firing off missiles but rather running from our missiles. We would pound the F out of their airfields deep inside Russia as well as seek out their marine ships in the Black Sea turning them into new artificial reefs …. This is not even close to what Russia or any country would really see from the west. I, would hate to see what Russian marine short ports would look like? Their ship ports would prob be chopped liver if we take out their air defenses and drop about 20 Daisey cutters on each port …. No comparison really
