More on the breaking ATACMS news. It appears to have made its debut in spectacular fashion.

Its arrival means most all of Russia's bases and LOCs in Ukraine, and some in adjacent Russia, are now in range. If Ukraine ever gets its hands on the version with a unitary warhead, Kerch is toast.

All depends which versions of ATACMS are provided. They have different ranges and different warheads. So far we've only seen the one with bomblets, which are not effective against bridges.

Not all rocket systems have interchangeable warheads. Some will use the body as housing for cluster munitions for example to raise the number of submunitions they carry. It's easy to think of these rockets as stovepipes with just a bomb on top but they're not. Lots have mission specific engineering that requires different construction for things like ground penetration, the aforementioned cluster or things like air dispersal in the case of a thermobaric weapon. Some things can be changed out for some systems but my understanding is most ATACMs were mission specific.

It's possible they shot one down but this cluster variant opens and spins over the target to distribute the bomblets. As a result, the rest of the missile is likely somewhat intact as opposed to a unitary warhead variant that flies into a target and explodes.

i think the M48 would be what you need to take out the Kerch bridge. Maybe they get one here at some point or one accidentally shows up in a delivery of M39's. Those KA-52 have been a huge POA. Bye bye birdies. Hopefully a few pilots got it as well.

Found this video about ATACMS trolling around the innernets.

First of all, bring back this level of video production. The sweet 90's synth music overlaid with strong masculine voice talking to me of death and destruction? Mmmhmm.

Seriously though did learn some things. Like it has maneuvering capabilities after launch. I am sure it is programmed so would hesitate to call it an active ability but still cool. Also didn't realize that some were used in Desert Storm. Trying to find reports on that but nothing yet. I also don't realize the dispersion pattern was that large. Back to a statement earlier, I don't think a better target could have been chosen for the first Uke usage of them of that airfield.

Enjoy this jaunt down memory lane of simpler times!
