I had a whole novel typed out in response to that recent "what we gain" discussion last week. TA ate it though and I was too butthurt to retype.
But this ^^^
We are learning the hard lessons of ever evolving warfare and not with American blood for once. And warfare has evolved again and we are not exactly at the forefront of everything these days. It's unquantifiable right now but I am beyond positive future American lives have already been saved as we adapt to the new realities of warfare.

Let's be honest. No one really does at the moment. Their Lancet drones are lethal.
Iran supplied EFPs in Iraq and Afghanistan injured thousands and killed hundreds if not thousands of US soldiers. A lot were armoured vehicles and tanks.
For the short term the best solution appears to be electric countermeasures or getting lucky by shooting one down. Like IEDs and EFPs, drones work well and they are inexpensive. Plus for the most part they keep the users out of harms way.

The US Army's newly fielded M-SHORAD system is designed to combat drones with Stinger missiles and a 30mm autocannon firing proximity rounds. Close to fielding is DE M-SHORAD which is a laser optimized for UAVs and other targets. A High Power Microwave system to defeat drone swarms is in testing for both the Army and USAF. The Ukraine experience has really accelerated US drone defense efforts.......AgLA06 said:

The M-SHORAD also defends against aircraft and helos, and DE M-SHORAD's laser also defends against missiles, rockets and artillery rounds, not just UAVs. These are full spectrum air defense systems and the cost per UAV kill from proximity rounds, laser and HPM is very low.
And Stinger missiles are $400,000 a pop. Not economic to take on a drone. Not feasible against a swarm.P.U.T.U said:

Those are full air defense systems, not exclusively UAV defense systems. Stingers are primarily for aircraft and helos and only a high-flying, high-end UAV would earn a Stinger. The cost is not the cost of the drones shot down. It is the cost avoidance of what those drones might damage or destroy that needs to be considered.
