Another fantastic video from Perun. Long form super deep dive as always but he focuses on one of the most critical aspects of this war, if not THE most critical. Artillery usage and ammo supplies. Touches all aspects of it, including gun usage and barrel life, and how and why the situation is what it is right now. One important point he mentioned and one I was absolutely late on noticing myself, was how cases of Russian advances and staunch defenses overwhelmingly coincide with concentration of artillery fires. Basically, what success Russia has seen in this second half of the year depends almost entirely on their big guns. Ulysses90, I think you would find this video of particular interest and curious as to your thoughts and agree/disagrees if you do end up watching it.

Bout 3/4 of the way through the vid myself but figured I'd post it for anyone else that enjoys this type of conversation. I for years thought about dabbling in some YT content over topics such as this, and this guy Perun is pretty much exactly how I envisioned peak performance in this realm and what I would have liked my own end goal to be like if I had pursued this in the past. Very well researched and documented, well spoken, and always interesting with even a little cheek here and there. This is good stuff here.

I'll update with short notes after I finish

Ok, very concise and quick ClifNotes:

Russia is experiencing a shell shortage. This is not in question. Their expenditures have been stupid high because they had such a huge stockpile to begin with. They have burned through a lot of it now and have to scale back now in some regards. It is false to think Russia will ever "run out of shells". They are still producing millions and will continue to do so. It is probably lesser quality and they have to dial back usage to match production…but they will do just that.

Uke situation is more intricate as it relies heavily on politics. Their needs are just as massive but they rely on donations essentially of shells. Everyone else is still at peacetime production and it will take more than US to outfit Ukes for '23. This can be done and most likely will be done by the coalition. Lots and lots of resources available but again, politicking will be needed.

Also discusses at length alternatives. Precision guided as one. Why ship 20 dumb shells when you can ship one precision one. Other calibers are still useful and readily found across the world. Cluster munitions is a sticky topic but could be an option perhaps. We have millions and Russia is absolutely using already.

I haven't watched yet but given the last month of watching UKR combat videos. I think they could sure use a lot more air burst anti-personnel rounds. This might not be as efficient as the HE smart rounds on armor but certainly alot better than the bracketing their doing now maybe save 5 rounds a fire mission. Especially over the trenches/fox holes.

I think they could also benefit from using smoke at all levels. Hand, mortar, artillery, even drone drop.

His point about Western militaries relying on a combination of volume and precision when determining the size of their munitions stockpiles, rather than on volume alone, is well taken and perhaps still not given the weight it deserves. In the case of Ukraine, for instance, in addition to very expensive Excalibur precision artillery shells, we've also provided thousands of far cheaper PGK guidance kits which simply screw into the fuse well of ordinary artillery shells and upgrade them to near-precision accuracy. Precision goes a long way towards reducing munitions expenditures.

we should start to deliberate on which side benefits more from a long, drawn out protracted attritional warfare:

the numerically superior Russians-

or the more motivated and united Ukrainians with better weaponry.

I'd say it's a bit more of an even fight right now, but Ukraine could certainly do with more force multiplication.

Equip a couple companies with thermal/night vision combo goggles and smoke eater masks and start dropping smoke everywhere.

The Russians will be haunted for the rest of their short lives.

The orcs can still manufacture all the replacement munitions they can use no doubt, but at what point will they start to run out of artillery to fire them with? Battlefield attrition, poor to non-existent maintenance, bore wear & fatigue, etc. will eventually catch up to them, right? Others have posted about this recently and I'm curious as to what the orc's solution to this might be.

Numerical manpower advantages with their poorly trained conscripts from the eastern regions but they're eventually going to have to start using conscripts from Moscow and other urban areas. That is not going to go well politically for putin's regime when they're dying by the thousands in a battlefield stalemate.

Isn't it oddly ironic that nowhere on Zelenskyy's wishlist of weapons and individual equipment do you find the Ukrainians asking for IVAS or anything remotely like it.

The Russians have historically been able to count on numbers. We will see if Ukrainian, with western arms and with more heart in the fight, can continue to field an army.

The good news this morning: Tokmak and other targets were hit.

The bad news is that Russia has launched a massive missile attack the last few hours, possibly still ongoing. LiveUaMap has several reports of civilian blocks and other targets hit.

Rough bathroom math as I sit here on the toilet (let's be honest here, we ALL TA on the pot)

Bout 7 seconds of hang time/2 times 9.8m/s = 30 meters height +- 5m

Not bad, not bad….*golf clap*

For real though. It's a bad design purposely chosen for speed and crew numbers. Which may make sense in huge running tank battles but in static positions…well we see the results right here. And elsewhere. And everywhere. Honestly my favorite image to date is that turret in a field that look like a skull. Or the one of the turret that is casually in an apartment like four stories up.

Try again. A 7 second flight would be twice as high. s=(1/2)at^2

ETA:
60=(1/2)9.8(3.5)^2

Wait… did I do the velocity formula instead?

Now I know why I got a C in physics when I took it over a decade ago…

Either way, a nice toss for sure. Their MBT losses are insane and utterly unbelievable for just a "special military operation". Not to mention their crew losses. Zero way there were any survivors in this one and others like it. We've seen accounts of how their best and brightest and most experienced were butchered in the opening days and are now left with dregs across the board. Also seen reports of two man crews in some of their tanks. That is desperation personified.

Germany is still a work in progress but a noteworthy milestone since they offered 5,000 helmets last Jan/Feb.

If this is true. I couldn't tell you the last time 500+ soldiers were killed at once in a single strike.

600 seems awfully high. We saw hundreds killed in that failed river crossing months ago. I'm sure they killed and wounded several, but 600?

Vietnam Vet Volunteer in Ukraine doing a Blog along the way. I can't confirm any of this but some incredibly interesting posts. This one contains a video of him from back in March still training before being released to combat. Latest posts run up to very recent.

https://ukrainevolunteer297689472.wordpress.com/2022/04/12/they-create-a-lot-of-screaming/

An excerpt from another 5SEP22.

I can't remember seeing it. Yeah, nobody is born with a conception of violence. Unfortunately, many get a taste of it too young.
I remember something I wish I had kept: the argument about C shooting a Russian in the back.
I do remember one of the guys (Frenchy) jumped on C for popping a mutt in the back as he was shagging ass. C got a bit pissed and yelled "What the **** difference does it make if he was facing north or south."
In the heat of combat you are running so close to the edge that you do things that to the bystander, might seem cruel.
And, a live soldier lives to fight another day. And, often we are only five against quite a few more, so you tend to shoot and ask questions or address the morality of it later.

It is being reported that the soldiers were being bunked in a warehouse which was storing ammo in the basement.

This was my thought of how you can have so many people killed by a small scale strike. I thought no way they are being housed with ammo, but then again russia.

Probably in retaliation to the big attack on the military school/barracks except orc probably hit a civilian apartment complex.

This vid shows moment of hit from apartment celebrating new years. Putin speech in background and says strike hit at 12:01 In comments state multiple russian telegram channels reporting 350-600 KIA. Happy ****ing New Year Orcs.
