Yes, but that account has also been known to bluster and troll the Russians, so sometimes it's hard to tell when they're trolling.

Agreed. Though the one duma member is ok with his 10 year old eventually fighting in this war, his mother may not. They can't keep the BS flowing that long without society demanding a complete withdrawal.
They were aiming for a regime change and they firmly cemented the Ukrainian identify and culture apart from Russia. For generations.
Meanwhile the WW2 strategy of collapse till winter sets in won't work this time around.

Notice how the same Duma member in the green sweater said Ukraine is a small piece in a global war, namely against the US?

Not to derail too far from this Ukrainian specific thread, but it bears repeating that Russia and China believe they are in a literal war against us. As has been mentioned earlier today/yesterday on this thread, Putin very well may lose in Ukraine but not before inflicting a massive economic and societal blow to all of Europe.

More like they need their populace to BELIEVE they are in a global war against the big bad U.S. to maintain their own grasp on power.

It's often best to take people at their word.

Time and again the simplest explanation is generally true. While they may use it as a means to stay in power, their stated goals, by Putin himself, is to flip the international world order out of the hands of "US hegemony".

Taganrog has an airbase; my guess is a strike on infrastructure there.

The air base seems like a likely target, I'm wondering what they used. This looks like the farthest they've reached or close to it

Explains why they went through them so quickly, 3:1 is what most military planners like to start offenses with, almost impossible to hold when outnumbered by 8:1. Russia is trying to make military intelligence an oxymoron.

Trying? They're experts at making anything "military X" be an oxymoron at this point. Intelligence, logistics, strategy, morale, etc.

Bravo. Those good people can once again sleep peaceably in their bed at night because the rough men did violence to the invaders on their behalf.

Setting aside the Conan the Barbarian BS about for what is good in life, this video shows what is really the best thanks that any soldier could ever hope to receive for the hardships and fear they suffer in combat. This type of gratitude may go a long way toward soothing the nightmares that linger from combat.

Yes it is a long way. 125KM from Donetsk airport to between the two airfields. In 2021 looks like the bigger one housed transports and the little one long range bombers. The port looks industrial not military. The front has been moving so fast I am not sure where it is and or how far off the line they would risk those assets especially having a few orcs still running around now caught behind the FLOT.

I thought reddit article said HIMARS but that would be ATACAMS and I don't see that having been approved, Crimea yes, unless they had actionable intel of WMD coming out of there. Out of curiosity I did just look at flight tracker and we had a rivetjoint in the Black Sea a few hours ago but appears to have been 400KM from Taganrog and I have NO clue the capabilities of that platform at distances like that but source of intel could have also been Crimea and that estimated distance is only 100KM from the recorded flight path.

My guess is either local saboteurs from the Russian side or some sort of SOF with drones operating from nearby. Probably not hard to sneak in a few guys with forged/stolen passports in with the crowds trying to flee from Crimea.

The Military Command of the Russian Federation suspends sending new, already formed, units to the territory of Ukraine. The current situation in the military theatre and distrust for top command has forced a large number of volunteers to abandon the prospect of combat service. The situation is influenced by information on the actual number of casualties, excluding losses from private military companies and mobilized from temporarily occupied territories. The situation is getting worse because of the general attitude to the own wounded. In particular, in Russian hospitals, the diagnoses and nature of combat injuries are deliberately simplified, no time is given for rehabilitation to return soldiers to the combat zone faster.

This is in the official evening report from the Ukrainian General Staff of the Armed Forces.

Found this below out of an article, of which there is seriously conflicting information which is no surprise. Boldened conflicting info with the update at very bottom. Of note this is similar description to the other two major crimea hits. I also briefly reviewed overhead of Chaltyr and nothing really significant sticks out, there is a industrial complex on the south, a prison, and a rail lines which directly connect with Tanganrog which would then interchange directly into the Donbass.

EDIT UPDATE: looks like missile silos and ADA just West of Chaltyr. 47.287911 39.446488. One of the silos is even open, but unless something has changed since 10-2-21 does not appear to be a strategic target.

Residents of several towns in Rostov region report powerful explosion
9:23 am, September 12, 2022
Source: Meduza

Residents of several cities in the Rostov region reported a powerful explosion. Citing eyewitnesses, local publication 161.ru noted that the distance between some of the witnesses was nearly 125 miles.
The sound of the explosion was heard by 161.ru readers in Rostov-on-Don, Azov, Taganrog, Novoshakhtinsk, Shakhty, Novocherkassk, Aksay, and Yeysk.
According to eyewitnesses, "fences trembled in some places" after the explosion and car alarms went off in Rostov-on-Don. Near the village of Peshkovo (about 30 miles from Rostov-on-Don), witnesses noticed three or four sources of black smoke.
Baza, citing eyewitness accounts, videos and photos on social media, reported that an air-defense system in Taganrog had been triggered, and that black smoke could be seen near the village of Chaltyr (about 12 miles from Rostov-on-Don).
161.ru wrote that the press service of the main directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Rostov region had no information about the explosion or other emergencies. Representatives of the regional authorities have not commented on the situation.

Update: Igor Strelkov posted on Telegram that an S-300 system shot down a Tochka-U near Taganrog. According to Strelkov, there were no casualties or damage, and the fire was caused by debris from the downed missile.

I'd imagine the ukes are trying to push their momentum to capture all they can before fall/winter weather mucks things up.

If they time it right, they can push Russia out and use winter as a helpful time to build up defenses for a major russian counter attack.

The wild card here is putin. What's he going to do?

1. Declare actual war, institute a draft and try to actually overwhelm the ukes, at least in the east/south east? Of course, this would mean pulling troops/recruits from Moscow and St. Petersburg which could escalate any internal resistance.

2. Throw everything he has into the donbass and Crimea regions, say the special operation is over and attempt to not lose any ill-goten gains by playing defense?

3. Introduce chemical or nuclear weapons to the battlefield? Would his military officers follow through? Would it lead to a coup?

4. Lose complete control and fall victim to coup?
