Russia starts to use new S-400 SAMs costing over $100,000,000 to bombard Ukrainian cities

I missed that somehow. Damn, talk about desperation moves. Russia still seems to be able to shock me from time to time. If they are having trouble replacing tanks, no way they have these things rolling off assembly lines in job lots. AA missile systems are some of the most advanced weaponry mankind has ever fielded and are incredibly complex.

I feel terrible for the Ukes that get hit by these things, but on the other side of the coin, this is such a huge sign of the continued degradation of the Russian forces and their strategies.

Incredible

Might be a stupid question, but don't surface to air missles generally have small warheads for use against jets? Is that effective against big structures?

Was curious myself and looked up what I could find. Several variants exist with warheads ranging from 400 lbs to about 50 lbs. Either way, there are not constructed as normal warheads with exterior steel casing or any kind of shaped charge I don't believe. By any other metric, this is an incredible misuse of firepower. They are not designed for ground targets, period. Sure, they can destroy things but this is like throwing iPhones at ants to kill them. It may technically work but also, wtf?!

I had to look this up. Apparently the S300 DOES have a built in ground attack capability. Not sure about the S400. Those may be around for actual air defense, but maybe they are designed this way too.

ETA Looks like they may be using older, outdated missiles for this. They probably have a lot more of these than ballistic and cruise missiles.

This is a GE pic from 6-24-2021. No telling what if any aircraft are parked there now. Clearly weapons and ammo destroyed in the attack which is good but we will have to wait for further accurate BDA. Those do appear to be 7500 gallon fuel tanks 20 EA on the bottom of the pic. They are probably gone.

Looking to be another strategic week for UKR.

This may be another airfield in Crimea near DZhankoi or Rail located ammo storage or even both.

Damn some of the stuff in that first one was intense. The second video in the compilation you could see tons of stuff cooking off and flying into the air. It sounded like the finale to a fireworks show.

Geolocated to these wharehouses along the RR. Check out vid of the rail passing by all of those MRLS, which you can also see as some of the secondaries cooking off.

This is the town of Azovske or A3oBcbke and may not be airfield/RR at Dzankoi

I can't see how Russia can sustain any offensive with all of the Ukraine attacks on logistic and ammunition centers. Add military bases where they are taking out aircraft and fuel and Russia's capabilities have greatly diminished. The addition of long range guided weapon systems appears to be the turning point in the war if this holds up.

Ukraine saying no to Russia regarding stopping the war if Russia keeps Crimea is a good sign. Russia was a dying country before the war, add the 75k+ casualties of working age males just adds to it. Plus Russia has pulled troops from places with large natural resources like Africa so those are at risk to China. Seeing as China is dying as well I think they try to capitalize which further puts Russia in the hole.

Reported 8 hours ago on LiveUaMap. This is in the Kherson region, on the West side of the river where those Russians are potentially stuck.

Ukes are making ground towards Kherson and have hit several supply areas for that region. That is impressive since Ukraine has nowhere near the amount of troops required for an offensive in that area.

Are you seeing new information about their approaching Kherson? I haven't seen major movement, though definitely see them hitting the supplies and bridges.

One has to wonder if it would be smarter to keep pressure on Russian supply lines and to make an offensive push in a week or two as that area West of the Dnipro becomes weaker and weaker.

Just some maps showing Ukraine gaining ground, it may be due to diminished supplies Russia is pulling back to consolidate on the south side of Kherson.

I certainly wouldn't ease up but I don't think the supplies are at dire needs yet. Russia still outmans Ukraine greatly so it will be difficult for them to mount a true offensive

I don't think thats it. This could easily be a small fire caused by secondary. This is 1.2K from wharehouses along the railway. Its white smoke, more damage should be present, and doesnt appear to have had any improvements from 10/12/2020 sat views.

Russia's military command is relocating to the left bank of the Dnipro River, according to Natalia Gumenyuk, the spokesperson for Ukraine's southern command. As a result, Russia will no longer have command centers in the city of Kherson.

"There's clear evidence that after the strikes we carried out on the occupying troops' command centers… their command staff is very quickly moving in the direction 'beyond the bridge' in other words, to the left bank to ensure it's not cut off from routes to safer territory," Gumenyuk said on Monday, August 15.

Other Ukrainian officials reported earlier that Russia's military command was leaving Kherson. On August 13, Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration head Vitaliy Kim wrote in a Telegram post that "the entire command staff [of Russia's forces in Kherson] is moving beyond the Dnipro." On August 15, Yuriy Sobolevsky, first deputy head of the Kherson regional council, said that Russia's military command had "actually left Kherson."

Newsweek: Russia Preparing 'Massive Missile Attack' on Ukraine From Belarus: Intel
Quote:

An independent military intelligence group says Russia is amassing anti-aircraft missile systems in Belarus in preparation for what it says is a large-scale attack against Ukraine.

Belarusian Hajun said in a Telegram post Monday that its analysis of satellite images shows a buildup of arms at the Ziabrovka airfield in Belarus roughly 25 miles from the border with Ukraine. The report from the monitor of Belarusian military activity comes amid speculation over Belarus' support for Russia's war effort in Ukraine.

"An analysis of the situation at the airfield proves that the likelihood of rocket attacks on the territory of Ukraine not only remains, but it seems that the Russians are preparing for a massive missile attack on Ukraine in the coming weeks," Belarusian Hajun said in the post.
Quote:

Using satellite images from U.S. space technology company Maxar Technologies Inc., Belarusian Hajun said in the post that the Ziabrovka airfield contains 10 to 14 S-400 Triumph and two Pantsir air defense systems, as well as three KASTA-2E2 and 48Y6 Podlyot radars.

Additionally, it said the airfield is being used to store at least 15 to 60 missiles for the Triumph defense system, with more expected to be delivered by the Russian Aerospace Forces.

This sure looks like a fantastic target for the spontaneous combustion gremlins.

A former lowly enlisted grunt. We have quite a few veterans that frequent here which is awesome for the different perspectives and insight. We have several officers, active and retired, representing things like CAS, artillery, logistics, etc, and I think at least one infantry officer somewhere. Quite a collected depth of knowledge that pertains to this current conflict, especially for a forum thread of a sports site from a plucky little farming school.
