Two Britons and a Moroccan man captured by Russian forces in Ukraine have been sentenced to death, the Russian-owned news agency RIA Novosti is reporting.
Aiden Aslin, 28, from Nottinghamshire, Shaun Pinner, 48, from Bedfordshire, and a third man, Moroccan national Saaudun Brahim, appeared in a court in the Donetsk People's Republic, which is held by pro-Russian rebels.
The court is not internationally recognised.
They are reportedly charged with being mercenaries. But the British men's families say they were in Ukraine's military.
Both British men are serving members of Ukraine's armed forces and the UK has made clear they are prisoners of war entitled to immunity and should not face prosecution for taking part in hostilities.
Tricky situation since they were serving in Ukraine's military, but I can't imagine this plays well to the British.
ETA: Also, this is that one guy captured in Mariupol. If they will kill him, you know damn well they'll likely kill other POWs from that city.
**** Putin and his ilk.
Meanwhile in modern Russia: a screaming match on state TV as to whether captured British citizens Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin should be shot, hanged, quartered or exchanged for ransom (the release of Russia's frozen assets), as they hope to cause a rift in British society. pic.twitter.com/QCpOFbSpsO

Simple, but deadly, and most importantly demoralizing. Excellent against foxholes, BMPs and munition storage.

Looks like they were sentenced to death along with a Morocco citizen. It's all Russian propaganda BS. They truly are terrible.Rossticus said:Meanwhile in modern Russia: a screaming match on state TV as to whether captured British citizens Shaun Pinner and Aiden Aslin should be shot, hanged, quartered or exchanged for ransom (the release of Russia's frozen assets), as they hope to cause a rift in British society. pic.twitter.com/QCpOFbSpsO

For sure Kiev should make a declaratory statement that they are members of the Ukrainian armed forces and demand they be given the usual protections as POWs and, if not, threaten to try as mercenaries any Wagner Group or separatist fighters they capture.Waffledynamics said:Quote:

The Ukrainian soldiers are kept at a pre-trial detention center in Olenivka, a Russian-occupied village in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainska Pravda media outlet reported citing its anonymous sources in defense intelligence.

Speaking of POWs, whatever came of the Azovs that surrendered recently? We're they indeed returned or exchanged for Russian POWs?
I consider those who volunteer to rise up and fight against evil as heroes, especially when they might have to pay with their life while their families really suffer the loss. It is my prayer that this is just counterintelligence to persuade other foreign volunteers in joining the fight. Issues like this is also why nations should take a more active role in combatting such vile aggression.Waffledynamics said:Quote:

To all politicians, experts and journos in US and EU who write that "Putin is trapped", "he needs a decent off ramp from the military campaign in Ukraine", etc., I strongly recommend watching the video of his conversation with young entrepreneurs and scientists today. 1/5

He is assertive, cool-headed and absolutely selfconfident. And sure of his mission which he finally stated in plain text: "Peter the Great led the Northern War for 21 years. It would seem that he fought with Sweden, captured land… He didn't capture it, he returned it!" 3/5

And the ending: "The same is true in the western direction, it concerns Narva, his first campaigns. Why did he care to do it? To returned (this land) and strengthen it – that's what he did... Apparently, it also our destiny to return and strengthen." 5/5

Russian units appear to recruit regionally so they have units entirely made up of minorities like the Buryat. When one of their units gets destroyed, it has a disproportionate impact on those communities so I suspect the morale back home also sours more quickly as a result.Waffledynamics said:
I imagine morale is very low among them.
Also, things seem mostly stagnant the past couple of days. Russia's offensive seems to have stalled out.
