I think their main problems are demographics and culture, but I don't think that has much to do with this war. I think this is pure intimidation and expansion. They wanted to topple Ukraine and set up a puppet as an example to their other client state neighbors like Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. It would also show NATO to be a paper tiger organization without unity and Poland, the Baltics, and the Balkans would know they need to play ball with Russia. If things went as planned it would be over in days, and Europe would accept it and keep on building pipelines and buying from Russia.

However Ukraine didn't fold, NATO is more united than anytime since the Soviet Union fell, and Russia is paying dearly for some scorched real estate that isn't terribly useful.

I agree there may be a culture issue with regards to how Russia views external conflicts.

Demographics is a silly reason to go to war and is overstated by the talking heads. Killing off several % of your fertile population is counterproductive.

Despite Russia's historical relationship with war, it is hard for me to believe that Russia would like to send its kids into an external war as a last ditch effort to remain a supper power. Again, I think the demographic argument is overstated by the entertaining talking heads.




Supper power jokes aside…

That's the nature of falling powers, they cling to what they were and find reasons to ensure they can remain as such.

Here's more on the $40B of additional aid that just passed the Senate 86-11. In addition to $34.7B for military assistance, it also includes money to demine Ukraine and to replenish US missile stocks, for example.
