Nobody has to put boots on the ground in order to respond. Massive conventional standoff precision strikes to Russian assets in Ukraine as a response. Allowing for nuclear deployment even at theater level for the sole purpose of turning the tide of a purely offensive incursion into another country would have absurdly negative ramifications toward normalizing that for Russia in Ukraine as well as for other rogue nations. That's a phenomenal red line.
At that point it's open war between NATO and Russia - the Ruskies will certainly see it that way.
I agree it should be a phenomenal red line. Clearly Russia will be no match conventionally. Which will quickly bring us to the alternative - potential nuclear war. NATO is rational, Putin might not be at that point. Which is why i think NATO will let him get away with it.

Russia won't attack a NATO country outside of Ukraine even in that instance, IMO. He hasn't been willing to attack arms shipments before they cross the border nor has he shot down surveillance aircraft (even unmanned) in the Black Sea. He's shown no signs of being willing to make a leap that nonsensically far up the escalatory ladder.

Yep. The fear displayed by many like we're dealing with John Wick instead of incompetent Russians is truly amazing.

There are sympathizers on here saying the same thing.
I think they can get away with it. I just don't see any Western leader who will be willing to do risk their own soldiers lives over Ukraine.

I think there are three four things holding Putin back:
- The false reports of success that he is most likely getting from his generals
- The complete and utter isolation that will occur - it will go beyond NKorea levels
- The huge influx of conventional weapons and "volunteers" into Ukraine
- There really isn't a "big" Ukrainian military target that he can use a tactical nuke against

Hopefully one of his generals puts a bullet in Putin's head before he uses tactical nuclear weapons. The longer this goes on, the more likely the chance he will use them because he's going to get desperate.
We most likely won't nuke them in return, but we will likely unleash our Air Force and navy to utterly destroy the offensive capability of the Russian armed forces.

Reply to this says it's Izyum and not Kharkiv.

Ukes are pushing east from Kharkiv to cut off the supply lines north of Izyum, so probably 6 of one and half dozen of the other.

There certainly has been a change in the OPSEC posture. The day before the Moscva was sunk our global hawk flew directly into the black sea on a heading to Odessa and shut the transponder off a few miles over water. The day after she was sunk Italy sent their global hawk all over the crash site transponder on. In the last week, including today, the GHs or RC135s have gone in the black sea transponder on and very possibly within range of S300 from sevastpul or certainly from any ship. Looks like russia has at least 3 platforms out there that could easily platform AD. GH in the Black Sea right now getting closer and closer to crimea.

To me they have now taken the stance go ahead FAFO, though personally I would prefer to just keep quiet and take any and all action to preserve Uke lives without any signature.

Minor point but I don't believe Italy has any global hawks. NATO jointly operates a few and we fly them out of NAS Sigonella

A great video talking about the sinking of the Moskva by a Dutch sailor who has experience dealing with Russian warships. He talks about the air defense systems and how they operate on Russian ships. Also goes into detail about what he noticed when interacting with the Russian Navy when they passed through the Dutch straits and how differently they did things. Rye Russian army's strict time schedules and not varying from orders has become a pretty common thread throughout the invasion, and it appears the navy is similarly managed.

He is not a subscriber to the idea that they were distracted by a drone. He thinks it was likely human error given the requirement for a lot of manual operation of their AA systems. Their systems are very powerful but require skilled human operators who are paying close attention and who can manually relay info to other systems with speed and accuracy.

Nothing strengthens your military street cred like losing half your Black Sea fleet to a country without an actual navy. Does Ukraine even own a boat that's in the water?

If this is true, wow. Very possible they caught them on another patterned time schedule and that that ship doesn't have near the anti-air capability as the Moskva.

Actually, I take that back a little bit. They don't have the long range S300 systems but they have a ton of short range AA missiles on board. Two CIWS.

Looks like it has been used to launch cruise missiles.

It is also pretty much a brand new ship, commissioned in 2017. Not a retrofitted Soviet ship. Likely has all of the modern electronics the Russian Navy has to offer.

That would just make it extra insulting if this turns out to be true.

Forte11 is out there right now, so we will hopefully get some more definitive reports soon.

Logic isn't really their strong suit. Ukrainians are anti-Slavic (Nazi) Slavs because they've been manipulated by the US for decades to do our nefarious Russophobic Nazi bidding. This is what they're going with.
