I didn't know we still had any of those. Aren't they Vietnam and earlier era?

They're probably still more reliable than what Putin's army has. But yes, those do look old.

Interesting article in the British press on hypersonic missile capability....

Putin's panic as NASA makes killer AI for hypersonic missiles capable of wiping out armies
NASA has given the West a major boost in the hypersonic missile arms race using artificial intelligence.
By CHARLES HARRISON 16:35, Thu, Apr 28, 2022 | UPDATED: 18:41, Thu, Apr 28, 2022

The latest hypersonic missiles are reportedly so complex they require a computer to build them, and NASA has created an AI to do just that. Hypersonic missiles travel at over Mach 5 (3,836mph), meaning they can strike anywhere on the planet within an hour of being launched. These devastating weapons can carry nukes and avoid almost all missile defence systems as they cannot react fast enough, all while operating with a high level of precision.

But due to the large amount of power and fuel required to reach these high speeds, their application has so far been limited by relying on using rockets.

However, writes tech writer Will Lockett, an alternative option is a "scramjet".

Scramjet stands for supersonic combustion ramjet, and works exactly the same as a jet on a plane, but with no moving parts.

Mr Lockett explains: "In a typical jet a turbine compresses the incoming air, fuel is then injected and ignited, which then forces the air out of the jet, creating thrust. But a scramjet does away with the turbine.

"Instead, it uses the craft's speed to ram air into the combustion chamber with sufficient pressure to get optimal combustion.

"This makes them far more efficient and powerful than an average jet."....

Yep. Production began in '61 but apparently they're still used and expected to remain so through 2030 as they're phased out in favor of the AMPV (began a couple of years ago). We've got a lot of them. Probably wouldn't mind clearing out some storage.

Sucks. I appreciate his service and sacrifice. As superficial as I'm sure that sounds, I mean it sincerely.

My crazy pilot coworkers managed to get a dozen or so backpacks delivered to within 30km of Mariupol in the last few days. They've sent others to Warsaw, and most of the rest of the thousand or so built up by hand, so far are given out to kids as they arrive in Cologne. If you are so inclined, feel free to donate. If you do, mention the Aggie Network. I warned the gang that numbers will spike if this trends with us.....

They've gone from 0 to 503(c) in about 4 weeks, courtesy of a rough and tumble paratrooper turned pilot.

Quote:

I asked my partners with the (Ukrainian) group that did this (took the backpacks to Eastern Ukraine at great personal risk), "why is it so important that you deliver these backpacks? Shouldn't you just take food and medical supplies?" The answer dropped me to my knees:

We dont know you, and you dont know us. We are fighting for our country and many Ukrainians have died. We know that many more will die soon. We see and hear things about countries that support us, but no one has sent backpacks for our children. Americans are truly crazy people when they do this. And we ask why? but we feel that they care about our situation here. When the parents and children see this with their hands, they will believe America is a good place.

Honestly it depends on how many effective combined arms maneuver units they have left.

That ups the stakes a little bit. I guess they are condensing the hell out of the training for them. Looks like normal F-16 training takes 9 months. If they go full out I wonder how well they can cut it down? 3 months? I would also assume these would be older block F-16's. They would also need AIM-9x and AAMRAM for them to be really effective in A/A and JDAM etc for A/G. Could be a game changer or it could be what triggers Putin to doing something stupid.
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Ukraine is going to have the opportunity to do a lot of things now that the military industrial, logistics, intelligence, etc support of 40 countries are behind it going BRRRRRRRRR. Russia can barely pull the parts together to put together pop guns and will be steadily trotting out older kit and younger, less experienced conscripts. This war is not won. But Ukraine is about to go Super Saiyan (forgive the weeb reference) while all Russia can do is throw bodies in front of bullets.

So, in a word, yes. They have a real chance, though nothing is guaranteed.
