At 2900mph and a target at 4 miles. Thats 3.2 seconds if my math is correct not taking into account acceleration to max speed. Not a lot of reaction time once your impending death warning lite comes on.

I would sure like to see it perform ASAP over UKR.

This is where having an internal threat warning and situational awareness crewmate comes in handy. Everyone picks on the DSO until its time to do DSO *****

Or are tanks the new battleship?

The Russians' active measure armor isn't nearly as advanced as British, German or American versions but who knows?

If history is any indication, in the battle between armor and arms, armor is always playing catch up.

If they take one of these down, that would be a huge morale hit for the russkies.

Most of the Russian bombing runs are being made at night. They are using dumb bombs so have to fly low and slow, is my understanding.

Would need to shoot, then scoot.

Part of it depends on tactics. Part of Russia's failure is that they're supposedly not coordinating armor and infantry. Troop morale is low and it's cold AF, so no one wants to dismount. The Russian armor has no infantry screen to keep Ukrainian infantry at bay, so basically every shot is a free throw.

Yeah the complete lack and failure to bring combined arms (which is 100% the Russian playbook) is a leadership failure. There is a reason why they hazed Corps of Cadets members in all weather and it wasn't (only) because Pissheads are sadistic. It's because officers have to lead their soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen in every weather condition.

Edit: Oh hell I moved up to my little L in this thread and never noticed. Heh.

To the war mongers that keep wanting to get us involved: Russia has already lost, they just can't admit it. The sanctions and ostracization of everything Russian will ensure they are the next North Korea in the making until they have some sort of regime change/revolution - regardless of how all this turns out in Ukraine in the short run. Literally, the only thing they have left is their nukes. And if you put Putin to the test I am sure he will use them since that is the only card he has left to play. Just give it time, Putin's days are numbered.

One doesn't have to fly low, or slow to be accurate with dumb bombs. They would drop several to make sure they would hit the target, probably with more than one or two bombs hits.

Lower is better, but not necessary, speed is not an issue.

I think no one wants to dismount because they have learnt absolutely damn nothing from their previous war experiences including their recent ones.

The Russians are doing the same **** they've been doing *unsuccessfully* for the last 50 years

They do when the weather has thick and low hanging cloud cover. No PGMs on the aircraft.

And with Starstreak, speed is an issue. 3.2 seconds from launch to impact. over 4 miles away.

What am I missing?

It would. But I can't imagine that even the Russians would be stupid enough to to put one in harms way.

If they are smart they will use them as a pure air superiority platform. Keeping it out of range of short range IR air to air missiles and its stealth and speed/altitude keeping it out of reach of SAMs

In the harrier we could hit accurately with unguided bombs from altitude (20-30k) but using our Litening targeting pod. Laser ranging and advanced GPS/INS gives very accurate height above target, but I don't see pods on any Russian aircraft and flying with commercial off the shelf GPS makes me doubt their ability to do what we do.

Next best would be dive deliveries, then low level with re tarded bombs. (had to get around filter to use the word in a valid contex) then level lays at low altitude with normal fins.

By your name, I get I'm probably preaching to the choir

Looks like an Su-27/30 but I'm not sure about the parachute claim at least from those pictures. The chute in the last picture looks like the drogue chute that stabilizes the seat prior to seat/man separation. At least that's how the ejection seat I'm familiar with worked in certain flight envelopes

At Mach 4.0, it travels at 4400+ feet/sec. If the enemy aircraft is a mile away you have to be on the target for 1.2 seconds. If the aircraft is flying at 500mph (710 ft/sec) then the aircraft will move forward approx 1000 feet. That's not that far forward nor a lot of time to maneuver. I'm not surprised a system that requires LAS has the fastest tickets. (This analysis does not take into account vectors just rough magnitude calcs).

You're going to want to attack from the side not directly overhead as the Russians are flying low.

If the Russians are really using their SU-57s, of which they have around 15 and most of those are the test aircraft, it makes me wonder why they'd risk it. Even having just one blasted from the sky, or crashing for a non-combat reason, would be a lot of egg on their face.

Without a doubt every Ukrainian with everything from an AK-47, to a MPAD, to manning an SAM site or AA battery is going to be on the lookout for those things with the hope of blasting it to pieces.

Ivan has a **** ton of aircraft in their inventory/reserve, many of which they could care less about losing.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I'm not implying they are but how do they know they aren't saboteurs sent by Lukashenko?
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. To be fair the Russian military is notorious for hazing the crap out of their conscripts, but that's probably their problem. Too much time hazing and not enough time training to fight .
