Not to detail too much but I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen any US equipment being used by the Russians by way of Afghanistan.

I figured the Russians would be all over finding a way to procure some that stuff we left behind.

The stuff we left in Afghanistan is overwhelmingly not very useful in a real war. You're surprised Russia didn't go to Afghanistan to recover small arms and trucks?

It's apparent that today's Russia /= Soviet Union.

3 decades of corruption and wild west society has created this paper tiger. Putin, with all of is yes-men, is getting his ass handed to him big time.

I'm not qualified to make an educated guess on the future, but I feel it's going to be without Putin.

Overwhelmingly their equipment is the same crap they had back in the 80's but less of it. Their advanced stuff is few and far between still not as good as western equivalents

Progress is being made, as well as losses. To any volunteers coming, probably a one way ticket, dude. This isn't Iraq or Afghanistan. The next 5 minutes isn't even guaranteed. Don't come here thinking you'll stack bodies because you won't. These aren't dirt farmers with 50 year old AK's.

You'll get humbled to real, REAL combat and violence real quick. This isn't a game. I fired more rounds here in 2 days than 4 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. This is not a game, and this is not fun. Choose carefully before you decide to be a hero."

A major internet service provider said it would end its relationships with Russian internet companies, a move that could disrupt some service in Russia and further the country's isolation from the rest of the online world.

Cogent Communications said it would begin shutting down Russian customers' access to its services on Friday at noon Eastern time, forcing Russian internet providers to transfer their data to other networks.

Facebook on Friday became the first American tech giant to be blocked by the Russian government, as part of the Kremlin's broadening campaign to tighten control of the internet and limit spaces for dissent about the war in Ukraine.

The move could foreshadow further restrictions against other tech companies such as Google, which owns YouTube, and Twitter. Both have also been under pressure by the Russian government.

And in a move sure to irk Oligarchs' WAGs

The French luxury giants LVMH Mot Hennessy Louis Vuitton and Hermes each said Friday that they would temporarily close their stores in Russia as the crisis in Ukraine continued to escalate.

LVMH, which is estimated to have more than 120 stores in Russia, said that it would close them effective Sunday "given the current circumstances in the region," according to a spokesperson. The spokesperson added that the company would continue to pay salary and benefits to its 3,500 employees in the country. Hermes said in a LinkedIn post that it would temporarily close its stores and pause commercial activity in Russia as of Friday evening.

Unconditional surrender only works if the victor treats the vanquished equitably. The Russians have a terrible track record just in the last century.

-3.5 million Ukes starved to death, intentionally
-Mass rapes committed by the Red Army
-They looted all the industrial machinery they could find after WW2
-Hungary 1956
-Prague 1968

For that matter, look at how they treat their own citizens! They jail anyone who seriously questions. Today, not just in the past.

God forbid, but I would rather my female relatives go out from a direct artillery hit. Better that than a train of Siberians running a train!

FWIW, I agree with you on the bigger geopolitics. This is a proxy war. We should have never staged the 2014 coup.

damn

So an operator volunteers and he says he isnt stacking bodies.

Yet people on here think the Ukrainian army is competently defending against russians who cant tie their own boots.

Someone here is lying. And it probably isnt the veteran.

No. He says the fighting is really intense. There's a big difference. The Ukrainians are heavily outnumbered and the Russians have a decided artillery advantage. That is a great recipe for very intense fighting from the Ukrainian side.

That doesn't preclude the possibility that the Russians are making mistakes hand over fist and getting an *** kicking. The Ukrainians to this point are decidedly more competent considering they've destroyed hundreds of Russian vehicles and tanks and have inflicted thousands of casualties in a war most thought wouldn't even last a few days. That assertion is heavily supported by all of the photographic evidence of burned out Russian vehicles. Even Russia has admitted to losing a major general and other high level commanders.

Both of these things can be true at the same time: The Ukrainians can be struggling to not be overwhelmed and the Russians can be suffering huge losses. There's no reason these should be mutually exclusive as you assert.

WE didn't do anything. RUSSIA ****ed up in 2014 by interfering and trying to run Ukraine as a satellite state. RUSSIA are the ones who advised the Yanukovych government and influenced the crackdown on protesters that led to a fully fledged revolution and overthrow of the government. Russia are the ones that have been trying to influence their neighbors' politics and prop up leaders more loyal to Russia than their own people.

so if the Russian army is a paper tiger...

that means the Western leaders made the correct decision in not sending troops into Ukraine.

the Russian army is not capable of reaching Poland or the Baltic states

If true they're going to start getting rolled back locally. Then if they can't feed those troops it's going to fall completely apart. I'm also expecting that if this is accurate you'll see the Russian exchange not open all next week. At that point you're going to start seeing companies in Russia just laying off staff left, right and center. Once that starts and you see unemployment spike heavily Putin is going to have a really, really tight spot.
How are Ukranians getting food? Think it would be harder for them than for the Ruskies
I can only speak to what I know - my 2 friends (missionaries) are in their apartment in Kiev just south of Independence Square, and they are running out of food now.

If these reports of whole swaths of Russian units being wiped out are true.....

....... this will have been the Russians' biggest military blunder since they underestimated, and got their crap kicked in by the Finns during the Winter War of 1939-40.

In all seriousness, there appears from videos of them taking over abandoned tanks and equipment, they should be able to mount a decent counteroffensive at least on one front [ie Kyiv] Maybe we should be shipping them fuel.

Russia having to sell their oil at massive discount to get it out
The American people need to boycott Shell gasoline stations.
Actually, this is a good thing. Forcing them to sell at steep discounts (losing the large profit they were expecting) leads to less production from Russia if the profit margin isn't there. Costs more to extract that they can get on the market.

When we were energy independent the prices went way down but ours was by oversupply. Their discounts are necessary to move any product at all. Big difference.

A $23 deduct at $110 does not dent their profits at all. Russia's break evens are probably well below $30/bbl, They are just fine at $80.

Now it is less money than would be expected for the possible war machine. But compared prices pre-conflict, the deduct isn't even that heavy.
It's not just a matter of being profitable, it's how much profit is needed to balance a producer's national budget. Russia is so dependent on energy revenues it currently needs a minimum of ~$70bl and high export volume to avoid drastic cuts to national spending and hurting people's standard of living. I imagine recouping the billions lost on this war and the sanctions hit to volume will drive its break even point much closer to $100bl in coming years.
https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/market-insights/latest-news/oil/120221-russia-opec-seen-moving-closer-on-fiscal-breakeven-oil-prices

Russia losing billions in oil revenue is a tactical decision not unlike their decision to crash the global oil markets in Q2 2020.
The scale of lost revenue this time is far more potentially crippling because of the unprecedented sanctions which are much more effective in limiting Russia's ability to compensate, including denying Moscow access to its vaunted $630B "war chest". Russia is not nearly as prepared this time around. Not parallel examples.

If anyone subscribes to Audible or Wondrum (formerly known as the great courses plus), a military historian has a great series of lectures called "History's Great Military Blunders and the Lessons they Teach."

It is 24 lectures. Each lecture is about 30 minutes or so, goes through ancient military battles all the way through modern times, and central themes become apparent: Planning, leadership, execution, and adaptation.

It is a phenomenal series for anyone interested in military history. Very easy listen. My favorite lecture is the one on the charge of the light brigade. That one is pretty wild.
