A "Battle of Kiev" must be avoided.

It will be Stalingrad 2.0. The Ukrainians will fight for every square foot of terrain there.

The Russians need to stop and pull out now. There is nothing to gain but DEATH for all and further escalation. They are having logistics issues that will ultimately lead to their defeat in the city, but will cause many civilian deaths and leave the city largely destroyed. And for what purpose? It will also further embolden the global community to isolate them when every camera and camera phone in highly populated Kiev becomes an information gun that shows the horror.

Putin's stupidity outranks his penchant for tyranny. The Ukrainians are absolutely kicking Putin's arse in messaging and propaganda -- this is something I did not see coming.

I don't necessarily doubt they've killed 7,000 Russians but I definitely doubt they took real pictures of 7,000 dead Russian soldiers

7000 pictures of dead Russian soldiers <> pictures of 7000 dead Russian soldiers

Could be many pictures of the sane scene from different angles.
Great point.

But it's quite clear Russia military is paying a heavy price in casualties.

I think minimum 5000+ casualties on low side. < 10,000 high side.

Will be catastrophic to morale and public support back home --- assuming the truth is revealed and made known to Russian people.

That's already happening. O&G is their last source of outside cash but the impact to everyday Russians from the current sanctions will be substantial, particularly in the cities where many of their citizens are accustomed to daily interaction with western people, products and tech.

The iPhone they are currently holding is likely the last one they will ever have. Most of their apps don't work anymore. Eventually the russian stock market will have to reopen and anyone with capital in that market is going to take crushing losses that they will likely never recover from.

Frankly, the biggest risk here is that we inadvertently re-create a post WW1 Germany and end up with a population in Russia that hates us because of the sanctions imposed by the west. They'll kick out Putin but who knows what the sentiment will be when they are figuring out who the replacement will be. It could be another militaristic nationalist who rallies a desperate and humiliated population.

It's a testament to the ignorance, complacency, and general lack of critical thinking of the masses. You'd think that the bulk of people would catch a clue when most media outlets outside of a select few are shut down, your ISP is not able to reach giant international social media platforms, etc... but they just...don't.

The common thread is that they are older and not tech savvy.

Makes you wonder how future Putins will be able to get by.

Putin had to these and badger journalists covering funerals for the 400 they lost in Crimea. He just cut off Facebook. Doubt he keeps this one secret. Too many ways to communicate now with social media.

Interesting and valid. If they can somehow get Putin out of the way, our immediate engagement with whoever that is will be telling and fascinating to watch.

Coincidentally, we are finishing up The Americans right now and have the two final episodes left that we are watching tonight. Fascinating to watch that show alongside this real-time, global event and how much of a dovetail there is here.

I'm afraid this is exactly what we're hurtling headlong towards and no one seems to be interested in talking about it. Private corporations are going far beyond the official sanctions and only making this even more likely.

Nothing unites a nation like being invaded or attacked by an external adversary.
See Ukraine.

Can't tell the number of casualties from the photo count.
If this is accurate (doubtful) the numbers killed may be way higher as there may not be any corpse to photograph in many instances.

Congress could, perhaps should, put Biden on the spot by passing legislation against importing any oil, gas, coal, etc. from Russia, fast-track it and put it on POTUS desk for signature.

Just like the Convention of States to pass some constitutional amendments without the approval of Congress, we need to remember that POTUS does not make law in this Country, Congress does. If POTUS vetoes, Congress can simply override it. There is ample sympathy and backing to do so.

Yeah. If you multiply crew sizes by burned out/blown up vehicles, you can get a decent minimum number of KIA.
