According to https://www.defconlevel.com/ we are still at Defcon 3, no change since Putin's statement.

Biden won't do that. It'll spook our market pretty bad if he did.

That website is run by some joe schmoe and has nothing to do with our or any other govt

This. The DoD isn't publishing the current DEFCON for public consumption.

Lots of instances where we announced DEFCON changes

In recent times? Help me recall when.

I'll leave the military analysis to those with better experience than me, but the Russian moves do seem piecemeal.

I'll say one thing, Britain should be commended for their part in all of this. From being some of the toughest in their language and support for Ukraine to government officials openly stating that should British citizens make the decision to go and fight in Ukraine that they would not be hindered they've truly been a positive force in all this.

Not to mention all the weapons they sent to Ukraine

Tracking some current Aeroflot flights from Moscow to JFK and Cancun. Canada closing airspace makes for interesting decisions on whether they have to fly back. Also increases friction points with the West.

Nice video on the impact of closing airspace

I think they have a lot more room to say/do what they want since they're not part of the EU and aren't as energy dependent on Russia as continental Europe is. I agree their response has been awesome through this.

Read the twitter imbed in the latest update: What Putin's nuke alert means.

"Once the preliminary command is issued, the system can act even if the president is taken out or cannot be reached. In this case the system, however, can only act if it detects actual nuclear detonations on the Russian territory."

Once they hit Ukraine territory Russia should be neutralizing them forthwith. I really wonder if they have visibility over top with long on station assets. Are they freaking blind?

While this is very laudable and good, it doesn't compare to the countries like Britain and Estonia that shipped anti-tank arms before the war started and it seemed like Russia would roll over them

Ukraine is the size of Texas and has a long border with NATO countries. I'm sure the arms shipments are transferred to Ukrainian trucks (mostly civilian) on the safe side of the border and then those vehicles disperse and head back inland by many routes hiding amongst other traffic.

Perhaps you're right, I don't see a formal announcement after a quick search. But maybe a moot point because the Russians knew about it pretty much as soon as the order was given according to this. Not really something that can be kept quiet.

I don't think they're worried about it since U.S. and U.K. and Germany and Poland and Estonia and Latvia and Lithuania and others have all already publicly announced lethal aid to Ukraine
