Mass flight of tech workers turns Russian IT into another casualty of war

...

Quote:

Western attention is focused on the millions of refugees who have fled Ukraine since the Russian assault began on Feb. 24. But Russia is also in the midst of an emigration wave that is upending its spheres of arts and journalism, and especially the world of tech.
The Russian Association for Electronic Communications told the lower house of Russia's parliament last month that 50,000 to 70,000 tech workers have fled the country, with 100,000 more expected to leave over the next month for a total of about 10 percent of the sector's workforce. Ok Russians, a new nonprofit group helping emigres, used a sampling of data from neighboring nations and social media surveys to estimate that nearly 300,000 Russians overall had left since the war began.
Mitya Aleshkovskiy, co-founder of Ok Russians, said some of those leaving are opposition activists, artists and journalists people whom President Vladimir Putin is probably happy to see go, and whose departure could reduce active dissent within Russia. But nearly half of those leaving hail from tech a highly transient, globally in-demand workforce that includes many who fear Russia's global isolation, newly adverse business climate and near-total authoritarianism.
The Russian government is "really scared and shocked," Aleshkovskiy said. "The prime minister of Russia has been begging these guys to stay. He's telling them, 'Don't worry that Apple leaves, we will build our own Apple Store. Please don't go.' … But I would say that the best people are leaving right now. … The highly skilled, highly educated, highly paid specialists."
Thousands of Russians who left, initially fearing that Putin would seal Russia's borders, have gone back in recent weeks. But at least some are expected to leave again, as experts predict a fresh wave of departures in the coming weeks and months. Experts on global migration and Russian population are calling the current exodus Russia's single fastest since the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, when millions of intellectuals and economic elites fled the rise of the Soviet Union.
"In some ways, this is a first," said Jeanne Batalova, a global migration expert at the Migration Policy Institute. "We're talking about a lot of people in a very condensed period, a matter of weeks. In 1917, Russia was in the midst of a civil war. But this is happening at time when there is no war within Russia itself."
The departure of so much talent threatens to undermine a host of Russian sectors, from the state media to aerospace and aviation industries already reeling from Western sanctions. The tech and start-up ecosystem was already withering under escalating government interference and censorship.

The sense of entitlement for Ukraine to just lay down and acquiesce to Russia at their demand is absurd. Like they should be honored to bow and welcome their masters.

Do it Zelensky, bomb the only route linking Crimea to Russia.
Been saying that all along.
Does Ukraine not have the capability (that would seem surprising)? What is the tactical/political reason for not destroying the bridge? Leaving the Russians a way out?

Would Putin even want Russians from the Crimea?
I read somewhere that it's the most heavily guarded bridge in the world. And was built to withstand multiple bomb and missile strikes.

But it's time is coming, no doubt.

Surely they're working on a plan to do just that. Or is there some other reason the Ukes would want the bridge intact?
If you trap a bunch of Russians there with no way to escape, you put them in the same position as the Mariupol defenders by trapping a bunch of armed fighters that can blend in with the civilians.

You forget these are russians and surrender is always an option for them.

Instead of multiple posts and characterizing this as dischord with russia. Who really is behind the sabotage in russia? On the cover it seems like UKR or CIA but what if its Putin or even putin opposition or a group that wants putin to go all out making it look like UKR.

I don't think we have seen similar types of attacks in Belarus or Crimea. Direct rail yes but not oil, food, or industry and i think thats telling.

Yeah I think very few of the Russian fires are actual UKR hits. Could be Putin or it could be some other anti-Putin Russian group sabotage

I don't think Putin would be destroying is own oil tanks. I'm leaning toward the Ukes based on…

The fact that US Special Opps have apparently been training them since 2014. The Green Berets are experts at disrupting/degrading supply logistics. So in my uninformed military opinion, this seems to make the most sense.

But just a guess.

I think the incidents in Russia are domestic anti-war or anti-government activists and also some Ukrainian infiltrators as well. It's not like Ukrainians that know Russian couldn't pull this off easily. It's very easy to start a fire in a poorly secured building or exposed area of a petroleum depot, or use a small drone from nearby to drop an incendiary on something.

Not sure if covered, but a very good piece about the importance, and possible game changing impact of the artillery systems, ammo, radar, and training we are getting them for the king of battle.

Anyway, awesome read, I highly recommend, and won't excerpt here.

Long (one of the longest I've ever read) thread with 15 points on on Russian troubles in the Donbas, and continued expected troubles. Really good. It's in Russian, and with it being so long, translating within Twitter is a giant pain, so I'm just posting the unroll link so you can use Google Translate.:

SEALs and the Green Berets have actually been training the Uke SOF troops since the early 2000s, it was 2014 when the Ukes started to focus on NCO based setup.

Amazing how discriminated against Russians are. And how it always seems to manifest when Russia isn't getting what they want.

Seems to be pretty at par for Russia versus other countries, Russia bombs everyone while other countries attack military targets

With all the recent sabotage happening in Russia, it really seems like the victory parade is just begging for something crazy to happen.

Looks like Russia pulled a switcheroo on the poor Mariupol evacuees. It's good that some got out but they're not being allowed out of deeply Russian held territory.

SBU arresting collaborators. I hope they pay for their actions in various work crews, digging graves, cleaning up debris, or worse. When the war is over give them what they want in prisoner of war swap with russia and send them to where they think they want to be.
