I appreciate Macron committing US troops to Ukraine since NATO is the US. If France wants to commit troops, then go for it, but US troops should be nowhere near it.

I still think all of this is very overdramatic. There's lots of chaos, but there's always lots of chaos. I was "guaranteed" during the build up for Desert Storm well over 30 years ago that all the western countries fighting in the Middle East at a large scale would trigger WW3, judgement day, cats and dogs living together, etc. as well.

But yeah yeah, I know, this is different because it's happening now.

I predict a year from now and then five years from now this thread will still be saying that it's imminent. It's like the rapture and UFO disclosure and aggie national championships and everything else, it's always "just around the corner" except it never happens.

In 1937 there were people worried about the build up of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. It's like the rapture and UFO disclosure and aggie national championships and everything else, it's always "just around the corner" except it never happens.

So brave yet so blind. The old, I'm bad ass and ya'll scared for no reason tough guy poster.

Well in 1939 something happened and the Aggies won a championship. As you said it NEVER happens except when it does. Repeat for 1914, 1861, 1870

I know very well about all that, history is one of my passions. Ok fine, it's not about it never happening again, it's about it never happening when it's supposed to and the stupidity of predicting when. It would be like starting a thread specifically about concerns about the Yellowstone super volcano. Yes, it's happened before, and it will likely happen again at some point. Mathematically we're past due, but it could happen this afternoon or not for another 100,000 years.

So with this WW3 nonsense for people to say "I see it coming now because..." is silly because it's just not possible to know that. I'll be 56 in 2 weeks and it's been "about to happen" my entire life and that doesn't count the Berlin Airlift and Korea and the Cuban missile crisis and other scarier things that could have triggered it before I was even here. What I'm saying is these "I see the signs" things are silly.

Well Jesus himself said "only my father in heaven knows when it ends". So pegging it exactly is beyond the ability of mere man. However reading tea leaves-- political, economic currents, demographic trends, and ques is within our purview-- though not remotely an exact science.

That said if you dont see truly potential era changing, destabilizing, problems in the world today your are as blind as a bat. Yet even that doesn't mean for sure that it hits the fan. But flat out implying all is "normal" as you have is 'head in the sand and ass in the air' denial.

Also, August 1945 was still fresh in the minds of people in 1947 and 1962. But look at the rhetoric of today, people have forgotten what it really means. Today its nothing but an intellectual footnote.

What in the world is with your hostility? I'm not blind, I'm very tuned in and I see everything happening that you do. This "beginning of WW3" thread is over two years old. But I guess if someone predicts a thing to happen every single day and you live long enough eventually you might be right. I guess I'll just predict that the Cowboys will win the Super Bowl and I'll come back next year or the next year or maybe 38 years from now and say I saw it coming when it happens. It's not about me being blind, it's about others here who think they're omniscient.

There's always a bias among people that what's happening "now" is elevated to greater importance. And there's news overload. If we had instant worldwide communications throughout history people would have been far more worried at other times, too. 100 years ago the only things that even entered most people's awareness was what was happening in their own town. Now, if a ship sinks in the Indian Ocean and you're out on your west Texas ranch you'll know about it immediately. This worldwide chaos has always been here. And yeah, at some point things might get worse.

But going for decades after one war ends saying "another war will come at some point" is not exactly prescient.

I just took two seconds and opened up the very first relevant thing I saw and this is 10 years old, Feb 2014, from the BBC:

What are the chances of a third world war?

There are certainly potential flashpoints at present. Europe and Russia are trading angry insults over Ukraine, and China and Japan are squaring up over a few uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

What are the chances of a third world war? - BBC News

If I spent the time I could find an article discussing this possibility every year going back decades.

The Taiwanese deployment makes sense to me and always has. The entire planet has a critical strategic interest because they are effectively a monopoly for advanced chip production. If china got control of that they could hold the planet hostage and greatly improve their capabilities.

The UK flat out said they would nuke China if they f'ed with Taiwan. That's why we are simultaneously trying to build out our own chip capabilities. This should all be obvious.

This one is a big damn deal as opposed to Ukraine where we have little strategic interest other than delighting in revenge porn and testing drone weapon tactics while using the Ukrainians as fodder.

The Second Cold War is well underway, and it's a war over access to semiconductors.

Taiwan makes 80% of the world's chips, without which economies would collapse within months. Taiwan calls it "The Silicon Shield", which they believe will keep China from invading.

The accidental destruction of these facilities would plunge the world economy into chaos almost overnight, China included. In fact, China is having the toughest go of it right now since the Tech Allies (USA, Korea, Japan, Netherlands, Germany) have cut off access to nearly all of their advanced facilities to create chips.

The chips might be made in Taiwan, but the advanced lithography needed to make elite chips is made in the Netherlands, and many of the chip parts are made in the USA. That's put China a decade+ behind, although they're working furiously to catch up.

The U.S. is also looking to diversify chip production in case the worst happens by building huge semiconductor facilities with advanced lithography here at home as part of the CHIPS Act. These facilities will still be run by the powerhouse that is TSMC, but the facilities will be inside the U.S., protecting in case of an invasion of Taiwan.
