Several volcanoes in the past are suspected to have resulted in a year or two, or even more, of dramatic global cooling. There have been a few years following volcanic eruptions described as years "without summer", with snow in New England in July.

I wonder if this eruption could have that impact?

This one was supposedly bigger than Pinatubo in 1991, which lowered temps by 1 degree for a year so it's highly likely it will. It's not as large as Krakatoa or Tambora though.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

The plume is over 3 miles wide at the base and has shot ash, steam, and gas up over 12 miles high.

Yes and no.

It is a seamount of which a small amount is above the water.

Partially. The cone has been partly above water since a 2014 eruption, but there are evidently four underwater vents on the side of the volcano. They are saying the explosion came from one of the underwater vents.

I pity the poor sucker who was there monitoring the vents. He or she must have been awfully quick with their phone to report that.

Thanks. This makes sense except that last sentence (which I know you are just relaying)..

But, the media going around would indicate the whole top of the SOB is blown open, not just one of the lower vents!

There are way too many factors to be able to predict that. Has a lot to do with the seismic wave, tide, bathymetry, geomorphology. Most of the time, they really don't have a good idea of the subsurface disturbance until after and that has a huge influence on direction and severity. Think of the side of Mt Saint Helens caving in fairly deep underwater. That is a very focused direction and impact versus a fairly shallow eruption that is mostly vertical.

Relax. Don't throw any virgins in a volcano. This eruption had a VEI of 5, which happens about once every 15-20 years. This is just the latest one.

This. Instead of spending possible trillions on trying to "stop" climate change, we should be spending it on preparing for its aftermath.

Stopping climate change is like trying to stop a volcano from erupting or the wind from blowing.

That would be great if there were an issue with climate change. It would be better to spend the money on food production and education (not programming) to improve economic activities that actually add real improvements to the standard of living worldwide.

Interesting thought. It is time lapse of course. That shock wave remained visible for a radius of over 1500 miles, which would probably take 1-2 hours? But the scary thing is, wouldnt a shockwave visible from space do severe damage to manmade structures for most if not all of its visible radius? I guess the world can count itself pretty lucky it went off in one of the most remote places on earth, and hope its done.

And lol-'declared dormant on tuesday'. Ygbkm

How much did it being an underwater volcano dampen the blast?
