Putin has spent years trying to divide Nato and the west in general and you could argue he was succeeding. In one week he has managed to undo everything he's worked for and Europe/US is probably more united that at any point since the end of WW2. This invasion will be his undoing.

But Russia won't leave. They will likely accomplish their aims, right? Even if the cost was higher than expected (although I don't think we know what they expected). The region could be relatively stable then, leaving the question of how long we intend to maintain these sanctions.

Even if Kyiv falls, the insurgency there is going to bloody and long lasting. Based on russias performance so far, they don't have the stomach for an urban night mare that will develop there.

Putin's house is about to be France's house, along with everything else he and the oligarchs own there.

I wonder what the Russian people are thinking right now. Their media had been pushing the notion that they are not targeting civilians. That seems hard to continue at this point.

You leave the sanctions in place so long as Putin remains in the Ukraine. It's that simple.

The part that takes it from simple arithmetic to calculus is the nuclear component. Going to have to walk that line and not push the dangerous animal so far into the corner that he feels the only recourse is to let one fly.

We have nuclear deterrents for that. If he launches a nuke so be it. His own people will remove him from office. We can't be afraid to act because of something as trivial as a "will he push the button"

It's not letting 1 nuke fly.

It is letting his entire strategic arsenal fly all at once.

Yup, I used the phrase "let one fly," but I can't imagine it would be just one unless it really is just a message. I would have to think he'd go for multiple targets at once.

I seriously doubt his generals would let him do that. Our submarine nuclear arsenal would take them out.

I don't think the Russian oligarchs are ready for their lifestyles to change. They'll take him out if they suspect his finger is getting itchy.

We got a lot of the weapons estimates wrong during the Cold War. And given how poorly their military has been maintained how do we know their nukes have, other than those on the submarines?

At this point I'm wondering how much of the total arsenal is INOP?

So is there a possible off-ramp here? Is there anything that could be done at this point that would allow Russia to withdraw from Ukraine? I've been racking my brain but can't think of anything that won't look like total Russian failure.
