You could in air refuel to get them to a carrier. Not at all an ideal situation though, if they break the boom then it's a emergency landing in a hostile area. BAD situation

That's still 60 miles from the Kabul airport. I don't see how that helps. We don't have the manpower to hold the airport at Kabul. In the time it would take to get troops and equipment in to clear Bagram this will be over. We were dependent on Taliban keeping the peace and providing security.

You'd have to clear all of Bagram and even then if the Taliban get pissed we don't have enough people to hold them off unless we allow the bombers and fighters to let loose. We have some sites near the border that we can use but those would be ruined afterwards.

Plus the Taliban have MANPADS, those helicopters won't make it far. Besides, to secure a base that large, you'd need a fleet of helicopters, which doesn't exist to my knowledge. The sad fact is, American soldiers are about to die. Biden had no plan, his executive leadership is beyond out of their capacity and they trusted terrorists to act civilized.

The tactical situation was always stunningly bad and our options were severely limited from the get go. This could truly turn out to be a real siege. It is definitely in the realm of possibility. The only upside really is that Marines are no strangers to that and will acquit themselves well as they always do.

Just a question of whether the Taliban want to or not. The choice is entirely up to them. We aren't influencing a damn thing with them either.
This has been so ****'ed up since the beginning. Misstep after misstep after misstep x 23498729348723948.

As a veteran this is sooooo damn infuriating. I spent 4 years of my life over there in that hell hole(5 deployments 2 IQ, 2 AF), and now civilian and military members are losing their lives, and there are probably many more on the way. Such needless bull*****

If we leave all those American citizens there, it will be the worst military blunder in US history. Not to mention if the military members get stranded there.


I get that. My innocence died in Iraq and any chance of it coming back was murdered in Afghanistan. That was over a decade ago. And Marines are still dying in that ****hole. This has been some of the most frustrating weeks I have ever lived and there is absolutely nothing that says it won't get worse.


Just want to say thank you both for your service. Wish I had more to say that could help in any way. Can't imagine what y'all are even thinking right now. But that's all I got.

I appreciate it and I know all the rest of the veterans do to. It's just hard to fathom what is happening right now for a lot of us and I will admit that this is affecting me more deeply than I thought it would. There has already been one suicide from my unit since this happened. A corpsman who was always abnormally caring towards the Afghan folk. Not saying we were all heartless monsters of course but he stood out in his feelings towards their plight even back then. He cared so much about them as human beings and though we will never know what truly caused him to get the rope, seeing what was happening and those crowds suffering outside the gates had to have finally broken him.

This is just such a disaster on every level possible. But again, appreciate the sentiment and know that it does help.

My original thinking was they would give the Taliban a few extra pallets of cash to come in and do the crowd control at the airport, assuming the Taliban would love the positive propaganda aspect for them, but now I don't know. The Taliban might not be able to resist a bloodbath and modern day Stalingrad for American forces.

Because I'm unaware of how many were killed while Trump was in office? I honestly don't know but have a feeling that number is getting ready to be topped. It wasn't really in the news and is a terrible situation either way.

I'm trying really hard to not get banned today, but I'm so pissed at the people that voted for this potato right now. Ticked at the media too that covered for him. Use your brain next time or just stay home and don't vote.

This nightmare is getting worse and worse every day. We do not have a functioning president right now and 10's of thousands of people are going to suffer horrible death and rape because of his incompetence. And now we have 2k troops trapped behind enemy lines and we are forced to beg the Taliban for their release.

I will say this and be as vague as possible,

I was negotiating a fairly large real estate transaction with an active duty senior officer and it suddenly fell apart last week. His wife sent me a very nice email explaining that it is just no longer a good time for him, them, to make that decision. It was pretty clear, to me at least, what the problem was.

Hell of a nice man and I am sure a fantastic leader.
