My ignorant understanding of history is that the Taliban were formed when the US (Charlie Wilson) armed Islamic radicals to fight the Soviet invasion and then took control of the country when they left.

The Nothern Alliance is a group of warlords who grow opium and don't want to live under Sharia law.

The Taliban came after the Soviet occupation. It emerged from the fallout of that war, because what ended up coming about was a fairly chaotic situation in which warlords with localized power bases filled the vacuum left by what had been the pro-Soviet Kabul regime. There was violence, corruption, etc. and so in early 90's a crew of pious Islamists in Kandahar got together and started fighting the warlords in their area under the banner of religion. The movement quickly spread and overthrew the weak successor regime in Kabul in 1996.

Despite how often it gets quoted that "we funded the taliban" or UBL, it is not strictly true. We funded the Pakistani ISI who chose recipients for that aid. This was from 1979-1989, pre-Taliban. Some of the recipients of the American money which was channeled by the ISI ended up with Afghans who later affiliated with what became the Taliban, but it was not simple. For the record, UBL was not among the mujahideen commanders on the ISI client list.. probably for the very simple reason that he didn't need the money.

Slight derail.

We have estimates of 10-15,000 American citizens in Afghanistan.
These are media estimates, no numbers given from our current administration.

We have approximately 6,000 US troops in Afghanistan supporting the evacuation.

In comparison
Biden ordered 26,000 troops to "guard" the US Capitol in late January.

I am not saying we should send more troops, just noting the allocation of resources.

Addresses H.R. McMaster's (Goalkeeping for the current White House.) charge that Trump surrendered to the Taliban. Highlights the differences between current policy and Trump policy. References the fact the Taliban broke the Doha Agreement several times before March of this year.

During the Trump Administration, such attacks were responded to with the level of force promised by the Trump White House.

Similar attacks against FOB Chapman during the Biden Administration were not responded to and emboldened the Taliban to be even more forceful in their operational activity.

McMasters has been a conundrum to me.

I'm fairly certain he had a role in the Russia hoax, but wasn't an active participant, although he did hire the principal spy. It's likely Schiff saw the opening and took advantage of it. I'm pretty sure he has the knowledge and capability to do the job he was hired for, but I'm not sure about his loyalty to America.

He doesn't have to be conservative to be loyal to America, but it generally helps (see history).

A man at home with the establishment way of thinking and out of touch with where most Americans are regarding Afghanistan policy.

One of Trump's major errors was in hiring people like this, trusting them to be loyal to his foreign policy approaches.

When you see someone like McMaster get on his knees for an absolute coward like Joe Biden, then you know exactly how far the Country Club Wing of the Republican Party will go to keep things in the family.

Because right now the Taliban have us by the short hairs due to our own incompetence.

We have been very lucky so far.

If we strike at this point, we are dropping the chance to get people out to near zero.
Not that it's much better than zero at this point.
