Because the Taliban won't shoot back at us. They will start shooting civilians and make it look like we did it. That is how terrorists think.

My ignorant understanding of history is that the Taliban were formed when the US (Charlie Wilson) armed Islamic radicals to fight the Soviet invasion and then took control of the country when they left.

The Nothern Alliance is a group of warlords who grow opium and don't want to live under Sharia law.
The Taliban came after the Soviet occupation. It emerged from the fallout of that war, because what ended up coming about was a fairly chaotic situation in which warlords with localized power bases filled the vacuum left by what had been the pro-Soviet Kabul regime. There was violence, corruption, etc. and so in early 90's a crew of pious Islamists in Kandahar got together and started fighting the warlords in their area under the banner of religion. The movement quickly spread and overthrew the weak successor regime in Kabul in 1996.

Despite how often it gets quoted that "we funded the taliban" or UBL, it is not strictly true. We funded the Pakistani ISI who chose recipients for that aid. This was from 1979-1989, pre-Taliban. Some of the recipients of the American money which was channeled by the ISI ended up with Afghans who later affiliated with what became the Taliban, but it was not simple. For the record, UBL was not among the mujahideen commanders on the ISI client list.. probably for the very simple reason that he didn't need the money.

Agree on the macro points, but it's important to correctly state that the Taliban originated in Quetta, Pakistan, not Kandahar. They made Kandahar their home due to proximity to Pakistan and the overwhelming Pashtun demographic.

And while you're technically correct that we didn't directly fund the Taliban, it's a game of semantics since we provide nearly all the funding for Pakistan's military/ISI. We could and should have influenced the Pakis to stop. But here we are.

Confirmed
While Biden has previously blamed Afghans for the U.S. failure to get out more allies ahead of this month's sudden Taliban takeover, U.S. officials told The Associated Press that American diplomats had formally urged weeks ago that the Biden administration ramp up evacuation efforts.

Tens of thousands of people remain to be evacuated ahead of the United States' Aug. 31 deadline to withdraw its troops from the country, although the pace picked up overnight. A defense official said about 5,700 people, including about 250 Americans, were flown out of Kabul aboard 16 C-17 transport planes. On each of the previous two days, about 2,000 people were airlifted.

I don't know French, but the pics are worth a thousand words. The French unfortunately got the reputation for surrender after being utterly destroyed by a blitzkreig, we are now getting a reputation for something i don't want to say.

Two quote from Charlie Wilson's War.

After seeing the Russians leave Afghanistan:
"I'm going to hand you a classified NIE right now and it's going to tell you the crazies are rolling into Kandahar right now like it's a bathtub drain,"

End of the movie:
"These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we f'ed up the endgame."

I'm sure there is some dramatization in there; but it is simply amazing to me how history repeats itself.

That was actually a decent movie. Hanks and Roberts were okay but Phillip Seymour Hoffman stole every scene he was in.

All this traveling is just going to tucker poor Joe out...

"Biden is set to meet with his national security team about the evacuations, and to speak from the White House Friday afternoon. In addition to criticism from some lawmakers who say the U.S. failed to adequately plan for the Taliban's swift takeover, U.S. diplomats have voiced dissent."

I won't share the crappy Google translation, but basically it says that French forces organized and provided protection for the transfer of French civilians and Afghan refugees from their embassy to the airport.

If Masoud becomes the bigger danger, he can serve as a distraction for them to divert forces and lessen the presence around the airport.

The moment we did, they would:

1) start mowing down the civilians at the airport

and

2) shell the airport runway and wipe out a couple of thousand U.S. troops

and

3) go find all the Americans left in A'stan, line them up and start sawing heads off live on twitter and facebook

At best this is shear, utter incompetence by the administration. At worst, China's pulling the puppet strings as part of an overall plan to knock us off the pedestal of world superpower.

Wait, wait, so today the news is that the Brits are actually rescuing Americans too in Kabul, while the US won't do a damn thing unless they make it to the airport/security checkpoint at the airport.

I didn't think this clown show could get any worse.

Quote:

The British military has stepped in to evacuate some American citizens who were left behind in Afghanistan following the Biden administration's chaotic pullout of U.S. forces and the nation's quick fall to Taliban terrorists, according to former Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger.

"The United Kingdom right now, I know that they're running patrols into Kabul to get British citizens, Afghans and in some cases Americans that they encounter, and helping bring them to safety," Pottinger told FOX Business' Larry Kudlow on Thursday.

Pottinger, a former Marine who served four years as a senior aide in the Trumpadministration, said NATO allies "in some cases, at the risk of the lives of their own diplomats, have been arranging for Americans and students, journalists, Afghan staff who have been working at the American university in Kabul, for example" to flee the war-torn nation that the U.S. occupied for 20 years up until the disastrous departure of the American military earlier this month. The former Trump official said those allies have "been escorting, creating safe passage and escorting those people onto the airbase and flying them out to safety."

He told Kudlow, "So when the full story of that comes out it's going to be quite stunning what they did when this really was not their mess to fix."

LOL no he didn't. Go back to your home, SHareBlue troll.

Trump did have an agreement that was working - we were keeping the peace with 2500 troops over there. Like everything else Trump did, the Biden administration tore up that plan and told the Taliban we were pulling out unconditionally.

This failure lies squarely at the feet of the Biden-Obama-Jarrett-Rice crew.

Meanwhile, Biden will put a lid on things after he reassures the public that none of this is his fault. Veep Harris will be there as well to cackle at all the right times.

"Here's Joe Biden's full schedule for the day, as the US military continues its evacuation efforts in Kabul:
The president and the vice-president will meet with their national security team at 10:45 am ET to receive an update on the situation in Afghanistan.

At 1 pm, Biden will deliver remarks on Afghanistan and the operation to evacuate American citizens, special immigrant visa applicants and vulnerable Afghans out of the county.

After the speech, Biden will leave Washington for his home town of Wilmington, Delaware, where he is expected to spend the weekend."

1) Of the Hungarians are pulling Americans out, damn

2) we are the nation created by the bravery of men like John Paul Jones. Yet now we lack the fortitude to go outside the wire to save our own people.

3) someone should ask Milley what takes more time, PACE planning for civilian evacuation or policy creating CRT / changing to zhe / zim / zhey. Legit question if it weren't possible and soldiers like Mike say it is easy to do at a high level.
