From SOS office: Evacuations ramping up. Delays in real numbers getting on planes was related to processing. Large numbers of people have been granted inside the airport but processing has been taking forever. (Personal note: US Embassy staff on the ground has been handling this and they must be completely exhausted.)

They have been bringing in a bunch of extra consular staff and the former ambassador to Afghanistan has landed to take over logistics of the processing. 2000 people flew out in last 24 hours. However, 6000 are now apparently inside airport processed and waiting to board flights. They have staffed and opened a third entrance gate.

There's at least one "movie" about a CCT hero: MOH

Seeing these children is absolutely heartbreaking.

What happens to them? Assuming they just get swept away and become refugees and never see their family again?

As a dad of 2 toddlers I can't even imagine.
I'm sure Biden voters will be quick to adopt them...

I suspect when this completes they are going to confirm that they got all of our citizens out who notified the State Department they were in country. The delta will be explained or blamed away.

FlightRadar has been better than ADSB Exchange in my opinion but still mostly blank. For some reason, 2 C17s, a KC-10, and a KC-135 were showing over Afghanistan about 30 minutes ago. Since Sunday I've only seen 2 other planes over Afghanistan.

True. I just meant that everyone talks about SEALS, Delta, etc. Many make fun of the 'Chairforce".

Having been Air Force, AFSOC, JSOC, I sometimes tire of the criticism of the Air Force.

At my very core, I'm an airlifter. Prayers for all those people to get the job at hand done and get home safely. It's not a lot of fun to get shot at in a C-130 and can't shoot back.

Biden says 'no one's being killed' in Afghanistan, can't 'recall' advisers telling him to delay withdrawal.

Report says top generals told Biden to leave troops in Afghanistan, Biden says he doesn't remember.
Currently a happy listless vessel and deplorable. #FDEMS TRUMP 2024.

Chairforce gets its name well deserved because it's deemed the least combat oriented from a ground war perspective. However y'all's JSOC guys are some of the best.

There's plenty of reasons why movies about other "brands are made", and look no further than the 80s classic top gun and why it was made. There's a reason when Hollywood teams up with the military and it's not because "it's a good story"

You can turn off your transponder and pull the circuit breakers. More likely, the military birds are squawking encrypted Mode 4 and nothing else. If I recall, that was a pre-bomb run checklist item to turn off everything but the Mode 4.

ADS-B equipped military planes can pull the CB on their ADS-B equipment.

Military flights can turn off their ADSB/transponders. I don't know how but have read comments to this effect about combat zone tracking on various public services on airliners.net.

I have no filters on.

Side note, I have a Raspberry Pi ADS-B receiver that connects to an Android device, and I can get ADS-B from planes within 100-200 miles

Military was slow to implement ADS-B. I see lots of trainers, helicopters, and transports using ADS-B. Though I suspect you are correct that they can and will turn off ADS-B and old style transponders.

I have never seen a fighter.

Oddly enough, Air Force One is almost always visible.

3:01pm Texas time, ADS-B Exchange has NOTHING over Afghanistan.

It is 12:30am there, so I suspect no one is flying into Kabul at present.

No ATC isn't a huge deal. You really only need it at be busy airports with constant traffic. Otherwise pilots are fine to work out out amongst each other their intentions and order.

Even Eastwood on game days is sometimes uncontrolled.
Can an AWACS act as ATC? Of course, they don't know about conditions on the ground and runway

I think they want to be seen on radar most of the time for AF1, but the FAA adopted a new rule in 2018 or 2019 letting any military turn off or on. I've seen F-18s etc. on it just disappear. My guess is our guys don't really want to broadcast the refueling stations orbits in the sky right now to the whole world for various reasons.

I don't think the Iranians would be motivated to shoot any of this down but you never know, and it's a long logistical trail to keep these C-17's rotating in-out. I wonder if they are using 'tactical' take off profiles with the gunfire around the airport, as that must be a bit of a shocking experience to the Afghans onboard. For a C-17, even if packed with a few hundred people, if low on fuel as indicated it is pretty light.

Though could act as enroute center, keeping separation on the airways in and out.

For the airport, you need someone with eyes on the runways and taxiways, as well as radio and radar to control air and ground traffic.

Oh, absolutely. I was shocked to see 4 military planes over Afghanistan at all. I would imagine they would be under strict orders to shut off well before entering Afghanistan and only after exiting. And this has pretty much been the case. Most departing appear on ADSB north of Oman and disappear around the same spot. Some have appeared and disappeared over Pakistan. But I've only seen 6 total over Afghanistan and 1 wasn't military.

I've seen RC-135s, KC-135s, KC-10s, KC-130s, AC-130s, C-130s, a C-5, and an E-8. They all have followed this pattern. I wonder if some sort of human error came into play with these 5. Maybe crews are getting tired?
