We are a long way past the time the Northern Alliance trusted the U.S. and the CIA. Charlie Wilson's war has been over a long time. If Putin is offering Massoud (the son) support, he really wouldn't have much of a choice but to accept it.

The only comfort in that is the fact that Putin hates terrorists, apparently more than our current administration does.

It depends. He could have simply asked Hillary for her opinion and insight into what's going on and what will happen based on her experience, which isn't illegal AFAIK. That's essentially 1A. What she can't do is make deals or policy promises as if she is negotiating on the government's behalf.

I'm already on thin ice from things I have posted in the past.

I get the sense they have no clue how they are going to pay for their domestic policies and their own national defense and it is causing them great stress. Of course they may not have gone that far down that thought path and are still in shock that the US is actually withdrawing from the middle east. Global political norms seem to be in heavy flux right now. Who knows what the next decade holds at this point.

Its not as bad as they think. Russia is no longer communist. It might make sense to just cozy up to them more. What else is Germany really doing already by making their pipeline with them and being so dependent? Just go ahead and own it. Its not the USSR -- it probably wouldn't involve some loss of government.

If they want those insane domestic overheads, then just don't go on the assumption Russia is an enemy. What they may need to worry about, along with Moscow, is Chinese now moving into the near region next to the Balkans.

I don't disagree. My hope is we can pull everything we need home as far as manufacturing and trade. Or even if we western hemisphere it all or "continentilize" it all it would be better. My fear is if we truly become isolationist the rest of the world will literally destroy itself.
