I find this picture incredibly powerful. The facial expression, the flag wrapped up, the haste with which it was taken (and thus fuzzy) all perfectly reflects how poorly this was planned and executed.

I was channel surfing this morning to see which (if any) cable networks had reporters on the ground in Kabul.

Ironically, CNN had one, a gal, who had been in country for several years. She reported that the transport of the embassy personnel and Afghan terps was just beginning in earnest before the Taliban got to the outskirts of Kabul. IOW, they were caught flat-footed and had to scramble.

Iran and Russia are in interesting positions here. Neither one really benefits from a Sunni terrorist-harboring Afghanistan now in possession of advanced weaponry. Iran has taken in millions of Afghan refugees during the war and are now setting up camps along the border. Al Jazeera reported that Afghan nationals are protesting in front of the UN building in Tehran to protest the Taliban takeover.

There's no doubt that both are happy to see the US leave and worked behind the scenes in an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" scenario, but now they have other issues to deal with.

CIA and Doha Station are separate feeds. Not sure I'm buying this one.

Apparently the United States personnel in charge of operations in Afghanistan personally met with the Taliban there. It's not exactly a secret we have people in Qatar. It is where all the meetings with the Taliban have taken place over the last few years. Of course if we are meeting someone somewhere, we are going to have intelligence apparatus is in place in that location. What was unclear based on that tweet was whether he was actually talking to secret CIA or just state department people/military who were in Doha meeting lTaliban. More than likely that's the latter.

I sincerely doubt the President of the United States is actually speaking directly to a CIA station chief in any meeting.

I saw something in another thread saying it was Commander, CENTCOM

US sending extra 1000 troops in, per Al Jazeera. Now it will total 6000. France, Spain, Germany, UK, others also there.

Would make sense, as he's the one actually meeting with the Taliban.

Has anyone kept track, or is there a good source as to how many US citizens were in Afghanistan as of this month? Have to think a lot of nonessential personnel were already out of the country. Based on the rough estimation of flights in and out, we've probably had the capacity to evacuate several thousand people so far in the last 24 hours.

The mission aircraft are almost certainly C-17's, and I'm sure they're tankering fuel and just planning tech stops on their way back out. They shouldn't be anywhere near overload, and will likely bulk out before they max out. The C-17 is a robust, well powered and highly capable platform.
