The beginning of the end was when some school districts banned dodgeball a couple of decades ago.

I think the model for this is "Dazed and Confused". Mike Clevinger needed to be hazed some, but Pink Floyd needed to be there to make sure that Ben Affleck didn't go overboard with it.

Bullying is alive and well and arguably more pervasive in our society is it ever was.

Only that most of the bullying is done by weak soyboy crybullys online that take offense to every little thing and will attempt to destroy your life unless you walk on eggshells around them and buy into their ******ed worldview.

Bullying is never a good thing. What the f/ck.
What a simplistic perspective.

On one end of developmental experiences are extreme offenses, endless torment, and destroyed victims. On the other side are trophies for loosing and kids with self-esteem which far outpaces their skill sets. Healthy & productive adults are formed somewhere in between.

A little bit of bullying helps you to open your eyes to the darker side of humanity and helps to create the ability to empathize. It can help you to learn where conformity is useful in some cases and how to take a stand for your convictions in others. It expands your ability to perceive yourself through others eyes & gives you feedback in the form of your self presentation resulting in different societal reactions.

Those who will successfully navigate life must aggregate a breadth of experiences, and some exposure to negative experiences is absolutely a necessary part of that.

Heck, even our "left can't meme" responses in the funny tweet thread is a form of societal enforcement of expectations: i.e. light 'bullying' that tells the offender to 'get out of here with trash and don't come back without something that actually matches the thread's intent.'

Not in the elementary school level. The stuff I have heard is just cruel beyond belief and had nothing to do with taking offense, but someone just is not like they are

No it's not. I was bullied for being fat. I lost weight and learned how to stand up for myself.

Did it suck at the time yes. But it also taught me alot.

Is it bullying to say this is one of the all time most ignorant threads in the history of Texags?
No, but is it really that surprising? If you spend 20 minutes browsing this board you know that no statement is too ridiculous.

It's pretty insane how out of touch the OP and many other responses here are, but it's not surprising. Bullying is a great social evil that has tormented children and adults alike for generations. It destroys self-esteem and drives people to suicide. People saying BS like "it keeps out the weirdos" have no idea what they are talking about and, frankly, are *******s.

As someone who endured years of bullying as a kid it took years of therapy to get through the emotional damage it did to me. As kids grow up, the bullying may stop, but the effects can last a long time after the bullying ends. It's why I'm against zero tolerance policies and will teach my kids to break a bully's nose when it happens.

But, you know, I'm not surprised to see threads like this here. Trump is a bully. People liked that about him. It's sad how that behavior is admired by some and not universally condemned.

You really think one can't lead to the other?

Would you argue with your children's school or activities if they were punished or suspended for bullying, since it is no big deal?

I don't think bullying is something you want to promote in the 21st century.

The people in this video were known as bullies and loudmouths in their neighborbood...and looked what happened to them.

I would show this video as a caution to anyone that wants to run their mouth and act like a badazz. You never know the mental state of that other person you deem as weaker, or what they are capable of.

It was also touched on briefly, but I think it's worth highlighting exclusively: a leadership laboratory requires conflict.

My leadership arc required some jostling. I got a taste of the bad, learned to stand my ground - confident in myself, and then learned how to look out for others. If I didn't know what bullying felt like or what to look for, I'd be a less capable leader.

And if I were never bullied and never realized I had bullied: I wouldn't have developed the ability to perceive or understand at the same level.

You can both despise bullies and admit that there's some societal value to having had some level of exposure. It's like a vaccine: controlled exposure to some taste of it is a healthy thing.

I also grew in a number of ways out of my experiences being bullied. But that doesn't mean bullying has any societal value. Bullying is a terrible thing.

Now if you are pointing out that adversity builds character, then yes I agree 100%.

I was bullied because, even though I was taller/bigger than everyone, I was (like most big guys) a gentle person.

One spinning kick and choke slam later and "Hey, Rob,....you have a great day!".

I firmly believe the current climate in public schools and their "no bullying" policies are detrimental to the emotional development of kids. There is ALWAYS a pecking order in any society. How do these kids deal with an ******* boss when they get out of the bubble wrap environment? They have no handle on that. Conversely, bullies need to be put in check too. Too many times, kids do not take up for themselves for fear of retribution from the school.

So, you support bullying "weirdos"? OK, who defines whether a person is or is not a weirdo? Was the crazy Christian kid at my junior high who wore a big wooden cross as a necklace deserving of the bullying he received? Was the dorky Eagle Scout at my HS deserving of being bullied for wearing his weird uniform? Both were tormented unmercifully for being "weird". Guess they should have changed huh?

There are plenty of "woke" cry bullies out there. They operate by feigning offense at convenience and then appealing to an authority or mob to intimidate or oppress the alleged offender.

There's a difference between bullying a helpless person and keeping idiots in check.
This...I absolutely hate bullying and it breaks my heart to witness people being picked on because of things like genetic abnormalities or learning disabilities. I think honorable people fight bullies who just live to prey on the weak.

But...imo there should be consequences for being a hyper abrasive idiot who lives to go against the norms. To me, that is perfectly natural and falls more under "self-policing" than "bullying".

There are probably cases where bullying may have helped someone improve their situation in life, but there are also probably situations where people were hit by drunk drivers or held up at gunpoint and ended up making life improvements...which in no way justifies those actions.

But often, the bullied isn't hyper abrasive. They are just different.

And too many on this thread think it is okay to bully because someone is weird.

I agree with you. I can just think of exceptions where the violence or intimidation I witnessed wasn't "bullying" imo but would definitely meet the criteria by today's definition.
