There are some who might not care but it's undoubtedly a terrible look for a leader to be seen as leaving their constituents in what could be considered their hour of greatest need.
Even if it's true that there is little he could do by remaining, the optics don't look good.
There isn't "little" he could do, there was precisely
nothing he could do. He is a federal senator, and as such he has zero involvement in getting local and state bureaucracies to do their job.
Are you somehow suffering under the delusion that we are a phone call or speech from Cruz or Cornyn away from getting the power up and running for the state? I realize that the left believes the federal government is the sine qua non of day to day life but I was unaware of the belief they are capable of altering the weather, healing the sick and repairing downed power plants.
Somewhere in the State of Texas tonight there is a family that has a loved one dying from cancer, old age, Alzheimer's or some other situation that has nothing to do with this weather and I can guarantee it is that family's "hour of greatest need". Are all politicians at all levels morally prohibited from taking vacations while constituents are suffering in any way?
You know what I have not seen mentioned in any thread on this board since this whole debacle started? Any questions about what Sheila Jackson Lee (or any other federal democrat) is doing to fix the power generation issues in the state of Texas. The main reason for that, of course, is because it is an incredibly stupid thing to ask, and most people with an 8th grade civics education know that. Additionally adding another self-serving politician to the mix (of any political stripe) will at best do nothing to improve the situation and likely make things exponentially worse. In the specific case of Jackson-Lee it is because she is a net exporter of stupidity, producing way more than she can consume on her own, thereby spreading the contagion of her dumbassery to those around her via osmosis. There is no mere mask or face shield that can prevent this from happening.
TLDR: Ted Cruz taking a family vacation out of the country during this crisis in the state simply shows that he understands the constitution and how it sets up certain responsibilities that are specific to the federal government, while the rest (like electrical generation and distribution) are the responsibility of the state government.
The constitution, btw, is the founding document that sets limits to federal powers relative to the states and the people themselves. It's the thing the left has spent the last 100+ years ignoring or trying to explain away in the constant push to expand and bloat the powers of the federal government.
