My comment was merely a joke. Guys, people can steal credit card information wirelessly from inside of a gas pump. We have WiFi. Bluetooth. Other ways of hacking the system.
Especially if you helped build the system there are backdoors available.

They could be using a cellular modem that only transmits when triggered on by an incoming signal or at predetermined times. It would only be detectable if you were monitoring it with a spectrum analyzer when it transmits and even then it would look just like a cell phone signal. It could be integrated into the circuitry and would require dissection by someone familiar with electronics to identify, especially if it's a proprietary cellular modem.
