What do the vapors they are worried about pose a risk of? Its something where bailing out of the hatch quickly wouldn't be an option? Kind of interesting so severe it could keep them in.

(Not that they should, there is no hurry at all, not even storm weather.)

Maybe a concern if there is any spark or static discharge?

After all this, think would just take the leisurely voyage back to Pensacola on that ship rather than a helicopter.
Is the crew going to Pensacola, or to Cape Canaveral?

It's a pretty nasty chemical compound, its why they made flag dude back off... MMH/NTO are a hypergolic fuel, and are toxic as all hell.

Theyre saying it's residual and not a leak, but they want it purged away before they pull the crew out. If it was leaking, they'd be pulling them much quicker.

Munch has a good point about spark and an oxidizer as well.

There has been a concerted effort to humanize them - hence all the "Bob and Doug" talk, so someone just going along with it doesn't bother me

I don't think they mentioned where they will be flying to.

Ah---okay. And they just said its composition is the Draco thruster fuel: DiNitrogen Tetraoxide

Right. Not only that, she is doing a good job of explaining the mechanics and processes and visuals as they come up.

Nitrogen tetroxide is the oxidizer half, the other is monomethyl hydrazine.

Yes. And they said mixing it can go even without ignition. No wonder cautious.

Had an Aero prof tell us about hydrazine. Nasty nasty stuff. Highly carcinogen as well as it "melts" the alveoli in your lungs...can't imagine how they learned this.

Great picture. Those other civilian boats and fishing craft sure closed the range quickly. They don't look that close there, but are ringing it by the time hoisted aboard.

I like the retro 60s look of a splashdown.

So true. A better century. Same reason loved the launch footage from the Cape no less-- it looked like pocket Apollo in tone.

Hydrazine is brutal, and I think NTO is pretty nasty to( its an acid if i remember correctly, and a pretty brutal one).

I remember when Columbia went down, and all the warnings about not touching pieces as they could be dangerous. I remember thinking then that it was just a bunch of crap to keep people away from souvenir hunting. Many years later when I got extremely interested in space flight I found out what they meant and had not made particularly clear...

If I understand the reaction right, they run it oxidizer rich, and that's why there was a bit of residue left that purged quickly.

In other words, there is a simple real physical (tactile) risk to the contaminants beyond the risk of some explosion. Its dangerous to touch. No wonder --- now it all really comes together.

Hydrazine will actually melt the alveoli in your lungs, and the NTO isn't far behind! There was definitely a tactile and inhalation risk, boring or not.

Here's the press conference from post flight if anyone is curious.

So Ib3 I gotta ask..... are y'all as excited as the non "in the know" nerds are?

For my part, there is nothing "boring" about any of this. Love that it is reviving and seeing imagery like this again after such a strange period of just being stalled.

As for the Hydrazine ---- that explains it all well, and I remember those reports about Columbia's break-up also. But the woman did mention "if they mix" doesn't even need an ignition, so it also sounded like worried about explosion. But this makes far more sense out of the deliberative way they took them out of the capsule. If anything risk of explosion means you should just get out asap.
