Agreed. Really wish this was a major part of these stories. At some point its not just hoaxers that need to be held accountable. Leaders and media need to be held accountable for the ways they respond that creates the perception of truth of the charge without investigation. Yelling their outrage over the unsubstatiated charges from their mountaintops and then whispering or even silence on the proof of a hoax.
It's irresponsible and becoming more dangerous. Akin to "yelling fire in a crowded theater". In some ways people are already getting hurt. These fake stories continue to be used as fuel for rage and the rage is used to destroy property and even hurt people.
This must stop.
I'll give you a hint... They're complicit, and they know what they're doing. Which is why it matters to keep up the good fight.

I really want to say that this person should have a chance to apologize publicly instead of getting expelled immediately. Even though he did something malicious and deceitful, I don't want to be part of the trend towards ruining lives over mistakes even if that means occasionally being "too nice".
Besides, if he admits fault and apologizes for the damage he did, he'll not be able to participate in this kind of thing going forward.
That said, was this a single incident of getting caught up in a moment or does he have a pattern of fomenting hate and division? In other words, is he a tool or an instigator? I've heard mention of a petition, and maybe a reference to a previous unrealistic hoax?

Well he was guilty of a hate crime, he just did it to himself. He should suffer the exact same consequences as if he were a guy wearing a Klan hood doing it.

I do not believe this was a one off.
I hope Shapiro picks it up in his podcast, but we really need somebody to point out Young's scolding response prior and his pathetic response after the investigation.
He should apologize period. Nobody is holding him back from that.
People keep throwing this term ("hate crime") around, but, if you are talking about a real criminal offense that could be prosecuted under state or federal law, I don't believe that this would have qualified, even if it hadn't been a hoax. Without threatening violence, or doing some kind of damage, I'm not aware of a criminal statute that would have been violated.aggie93 said:

That, combined with Young's desire to shield the hoaxer, is why this thing will probably not go anywhere further.

As someone who doesn't consider himself racist, I'm offended by the broad brush accusations. As someone who doesn't consider himself dumb, I'm offended by the quality of the hoaxes.
I don't want to give people ideas, but 15 seconds of planning would have made this 100x more believable and almost completely bulletproof as far as getting caught.

If he didn't try to blame a stranger in the video I'd maybe have some mercy. But he has shown his character and willingness to cause serious harm and disruption to others. He needs to go!

Oh, I agree that as an individual, he should apologize of his own free will regardless of of the consequences or lack thereof.
As an institution, TAMU should require a full admission of guilt and apology to students, former students, faculty, the community, and his friends and allies before considering his continued attendance.

This. Had he been able to successfully convince the cops that the white dog walker had done it, he would have allowed that man's life to be ruined.

That part bothers me, too. The random guy walking his dog has to watch his back now simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Lies beget lies....
