Why do people keep saying this? The president today, along with many other officials said this will be done at the state level.

Yep. States will few cases aren't shutting down anything.

Ohio shut down bars and restaurants when there were 30 cases an 0 deaths

Are they only shutting down businesses that interact directly with the customer? There are a lot of non essential businesses that can get by shipping their products or doing touchless pickup.

Not a total lockdown. We'll see. Hoping for the best.

I was getting stir crazy this afternoon, so I decided to drive up Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica and knock out a couple of podcasts on the way. Just a leisurely drive to stay sane. Yes, it was technically breaking the "orders," as it wasn't an "essential" trip by any means, but I figured I'd be alone in my car the entire time; no contact with another human being, hardly any traffic on the PCH, driving along the ocean on a sunny Saturday afternoon, which, considering the current circumstance, sounded too good to pass up.

Except the second I left my home, if I had no idea we were in the middle of a pandemic, I also would have had no clue that California was under a stay-at-home order.

There were people EVERYWHERE.

Driving, walking, riding bikes, waiting on to-go order outside of restaurants, etc. (all technically "allowed," mind you). And once I hit the PCH, there were people all over the beach and outside of restaurants for miles and miles, hardly any of them staying six feet apart. Even traffic was congested.

Again, I was obviously and admittedly breaking the rules as well, but it was pretty shocking to see, and made me realize that I need to do my part and take this more seriously. If today was any indication, people don't give a sh*t about "orders" if they don't come with consequences. So we either need to drop this whole charade or go full-on lockdown mode. Because this in-between is basically pointless, based on what I saw today.

I've tried to stay away from this thread the last day and a half or so bc I'm staying home anyways so tried to keep my mind away.

I've been on twitter though.

Seems like the hysteria has died down significantly.

Is that accurate?

Not on Twitter.

And the only reason today seems quiet here is because most of the doomsdayers haven't been around.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

For sure, we added like 7,000 newly confirmed cases today. Will be interesting to see if the rate shifts dramatically in the next few days.

I was texting with a friend about this earlier today and we both agreed. There seems to be a slightly more predominant feeling that the numbers may not be as bad as projected (though still horrific in places like New York), and I'm getting the sense lately that more and more people are basically like, "Screw it, I'll take my chances getting it." What that means for the bigger picture, I have no idea, but I've definitely noticed a drop in overall panic over the last 36 hours or so.

All this is like putting on a condom after you've already ****ed.

Its clear that this thing has spread far and wide already. Its probably been spreading in the US since Nov/Dec last year.

Time to come up with a new strategy and salvage the economy before it gets any worse.

Genome sequencing says the first case in the United States was January 15th from Wuhan.

At least here in California, it feels like they're about to tighten up on the orders. The governor apparently isn't happy with everything he's seeing today (all the people out and about), and I'm betting that leads to some fairly strict enforcement in the next few days. Though, I have no idea how any of it would actually be enacted.

I don't see how we're avoiding a full lock down at this point. At this point we're wasting time not getting things started now so they can be over sooner.

The sooner we start, the sooner we can get back to repairing an economy that is gonna be in shambles.

Maybe all the hand sanitizer, continuing work from home, paranoid surface cleaning, hand washing, and travel reductions will be enough.

If some of the hospitality sector can keep going it will be a lot better.

And stuff like this is why its possible some governor go all the way and declare martial law.

I think they do a soft ban because they know it will help and also knowing a lot of people will ignore it. It's a halfway answer. If they were serious they'd put teeth behind it. They won't do that until they have to / public will accept it because they are afraid.

Crazy story from New Orleans. Severe lung damage in folks in their 40s, ventilators on highest settings and they still gasp for air. Pink frothy secretions in breathing tubes. Running out of PPE.
