Just got word that an Army Special Forces buddy has it, and his having a "very rough time."

His words.

Age 42 and in excellent physical condition.

Damn, that's rough if he is having trouble. This thing really does seem like it's luck of the draw. It's like playing Russian roulette even if you are healthy.

Was talking with a co-worker this morning and his buddy in Houston has it. He's in his mid 30's and very fit, but he said his lungs are killing him and he's having a hard time.

Hard time because if the illness or because he's acutely aware of his symptoms due to his high level of fitness? Also when you're really fit and active, downtime due to illness or injury can be mentally challenging as well.

Illness.

And this should be called the China flu. It is their fault. They are the ones who are directly responsible for this. And remember who was in bed with them. It was not Trump, in fact, he was called a racist when he blocked travel from China. Unbelievable except I know that liberalism trumps everything.

The whole stupidity of this thing is calling it the China flu doesn't actually help or change anything. Why wasn't SARS the Chinese flu? What happens the next time a virus comes out of China? Do we call it China Flu II: Electric Boogaloo?

For that matter, Coronavirus is barely more helpful.

I live in Eagle county Colorado which is a hotspot. They aren't testing anyone except extreme cases any more and our number is still high. I know some people that got tested before the requirements on testing started. The president of the hospital system wrote a letter to everyone the other day say basically that there are hundreds if not thousands affected here which is significant because only about 20k live here full time. I can post the letter if anyone is interested.

From people we know personally
- Mother (50's) and daughter (7) - got tested last week. Feel like crap but hanging out at their house. Felt ok enough one day to be dumbasses and break quarantine and go for a hike but it brought back the daughters fever. They are doing better but still sick.
- Husband and wife both in their 40's. Got tested - wife has underlying conditions. Symptoms hit fast and hard but only lasted a little over a day. Felt about 90% on day 2.
- lady in her 30's - not tested because of requirements but doctors presume she has it. Just feels sick and chest pressure. Waiting it out at her house.

On the local Vail moms Facebook there's lots of talk from people that have that say it feels like you are hungover and /or there's a weight on your chest. None of them hospitalized. The info from online is less reliable because it's a moms page on Facebook and it's not first hand.

ETA - they have a self service reporting tool to track cases here that is find of interesting if you are into that stuff.

Wuhan Flu would have been more descriptive and in keeping with the convention for these things. That's what even the Chinese press called it before it apparently became racist to connect it to a particular geographic area once Trump did so (just like it was racist to cut off travel from China early on, because Trump).

But when the Chinese govt began actively trying to blame the US for the flu thru it's disinformation campaign, then dang right we should hang this on China. And that's not petty, that's reality. They're responsible for the way this thing took off. Their refusal to close down the wet markets is probably responsible for this thing's existence! And they already knew wet markets could lead to this kind of thing; how much blood and economic ruin is on their hands?

And they want to try to engage in subterfuge to try to convince the world this is somehow our fault? If we didn't all have our focus on dealing with the repercussions, it would be infuriating. If China won't own it, the very least we can do is hang this around their necks and not let them try to change the narrative.

And if calling it the China Flu gets the PC/SJWs to jump offside and show their rears to the world with their irrational criticism of it, all the better. It's such a ridiculous complaint that I am entertained by seeing it, and I don't have March Madness to entertain myself.

Just have to remember it will be 3-4 more weeks before we have any initial insight into whether the measures enacted last week are having any effect, and the data will likely be heavily debated because there wasn't testing beforehand to draw inferences between before and after.

We'll probably have a better sense of progress (or not) in early or mid-May. Until then, the numbers should be fully expected to go up dramatically as additional testing is rolled out.

This is a marathon, not a sprint.

I think I've made it pretty clear my stance on China in the past, and I don't care much about any of the racist overtones (although China Flu as opposed to Chinese Flu is better in that respect). My objections are purely on a nomenclature standpoint, plus the fact that this appears to be a deliberate reframing of the discussion onto something Trump and Co. know they can win. It's a distraction from the administration, and a smart one I'll grant, but it's annoying that people are rising to the bait.

Personally, I prefer Wuhan Flu or COVID-19. Both are descriptive and precise.

Italy just reported numbers, and they aren't good:

New confirmed cases have increased another 10% day-over-day, and death totals up 25% from previous day too.

Unless their lockdown stuff doesn't show immediate effects in the next 4-5 days, they'll be at 1k dead/day pretty soon.
