Was pretty obvious this hysteria was going to happen when the virus took hold in the US.

Hell, I'll continue to mock you. The stores and restaurants aren't closing. Anything outside of your normal inventory is just silly.
Especially if you "stocked up" with perishable goods.

Why should I care if restaurants are open right now? Might as well go around licking door knobs

Meh, if you're hoarding something that somebody needs bad enough, they'll just take it. These 450 lb 70 year old preppers amaze me with their assumption that they're both immortal and able to deploy an arsenal at will to protect their store of Libby potted meat food.

It's not about doomsday, it's about being able to comfortably weather supply disruption, which is already happening.

Mind linking one of these tweets please?

We won't even be able to keep pace with Italy in terms of treating patients.

They have 1,500 ICU beds in the entire country with 1,153 critical cases. This is why they are struggling. It's pretty incredible for a Harvard professor to not account for this factor or occupancy.

If we are going to use his simplified analysis, we have capacity for (750,000 beds / 10% critical rate) 7.5 million cases at any one time, but that's stupid. The bottleneck will be in ICU beds and mechanical ventilators.
Do you happen to know what the scenario would be like for rural hospitals? Not trolling, genuinely curious. Friend of mine just moved into their dream place out in the country but they travel back to Aggieland several hours away to visit their doctors, etc. I am sympathetic to wanting to stick with a preferred doctor, but how is access for folks who further out that don't do that--do the community hospitals have pretty much everything necessary for something like this?

Was just discussing this, and I'm not sure if they do. This is likely going to be an issue because the resources are centralized in the urban areas. The only thing I can figure is there has to be discussions at the state level and agreements made at the local levels on allocating resources statewide as and where they are needed. However, there is a very strong chance we'll be operating at 50% to 150% above ICU capacity for an extended period of time based on the numbers they're throwing out.

They finally had to specifically deny the rumor because people kept asking.

The amount of advice not coming from Federal, State, and local officials is staggering. Every hospital, business, school district, family is being left to make decisions on their own.

I'm a small government guy, but even I think one of the jobs of government is to manage a pandemic. What a complete, systemic breakdown. This isn't a criticism of the president or a party. It's a criticism of our government's failure, at every level, to fulfill one its basic responsibilities.

The permanent bureaucracy has been too occupied trying to correct the emergency of Trump's election that they haven't had time to work on disaster preparations.

This was the sh*t ticket isle at HEB in south Austin. Also, bleach was out, but otherwise everything was normal.

Ohio Dept of Health

if that's true, and they have 0 deaths and the hospitals aren't overwhelmed yet, then that's pretty freaking good news with regard to disease severity

If you're not testing for the virus you are not going to have any deaths from the virus.

I know that's simplistic but that's why they don't have any deaths in Ohio from their 100,000 cases.
Whether you test or not, people needing hospitalization still need hospitalization.......

Wish they would add some context so we know whether to panic. Is she hospitalized? Is it just a slight fever and cough? Is she alive? Does she need toilet paper?

I just went to a store in Florida get normal stuff, and the TP isle here was empty just like this photo. And a lot of produce was scarce.

What will people do with so much TP?

On a positive note, Sherwood Forest Fair outside Austin is still a go this weekend. If you need entertainment and are bummed by Austin shutting down, head to Bastrop.

My sister lives there. You could peel 1 a month off the grill of your car and eat well. That place is nuts.

I live out in the Big Bend, and our hospital has been pretty transparent. They had a press conference earlier this week that was pretty informative. Basically we have 2 ICU beds in the area. Once those are taken they will move people to El Paso.

The HEB in Leander was half picked over. I bet inventory levels were no better than 50%. The place was a madhouse. It was surreal. Similar to how things felt after 911.
