Geez...A lot of stuff Just happened at once. And I don't get the Europe ban at all.
Italy is off the charts and it's spreading all over Europe.

Yeah, I understand that.

But it's here and spreading at home. We need testing, we need coordination. We need to address the issues here. Give me those tests we were promised last week. To me, this is plugging a hole when the ship's already underwater.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the obvious. This absolutely hammers the markets. Putting a priority on taking care of the cases at home, getting drive thru testing, coordinating restrictions and quarantines in affected communities, that's a lot easier to digest than cutting off ties with half of the world.

You sure about that? Coal plants a far, far more labor intensive than natural gas plants. You have to mine, ship, unload, pile, convey, pulverize and then finally generate power. Natural gas plants easily have 50% or less the crews of coal plants.

Exactly. He gave the wrong speech tonight. He tried to give a speech to show confidence and turn the markets around. It fell flat.

The correct speech was (i) we're doing everything we can to get millions of tests out now, (ii) we've issued guidance on social distancing and have empowered state and local governments to implement specific policies and (iii) we're going to do everything we can to slow the virus in order to not overwhelm our healthcare system.

You should source such statements.

Also, better to be prepared, than to get caught flatfooted.

I work for a Texas Power Utility, I got an email from my CEO to review our companies Pandemic plan. Is that a good enough source?

Is the consensus changing on the weather impact on the coronavirus? I've seen a few papers now quoting experts saying that warmer weather "should" help stop the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus but since this is novel, it can't be said for sure

I have a surgeon buddy who works at a hospital in Arkansas. Tells me they had a 30 y/o admitted with ARDS/respiratory failure. Long hospital course. Eventually expired. Family requested autopsy. Path report - ARDS due to, you guessed it, coronavirus. Not tested because lack of "travel hx/exposures." Egregious to me. Innumerable exposed there.

no I don't think so

it's just some people wondering what's going on

it could be just reporting, but that seems a little hard to believe at this point. someone would be saying something somewhere if there was an outbreak.

Sun tanning should help build immunity.

https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2017/01/23/how-sun-exposure-improves-immune-function.aspx

Quote:

Sensible sun exposure has many health benefits. Many are the result of vitamin D production, which occurs when your skin is exposed to UV light, but many others are unrelated to vitamin D
Recent research shows both blue light and UVA light boosts the activity of T lymphocytes. As little as five to 10 minutes of sun exposure was needed to boost immune cell activity
The healthiest blue light is from the sun, as it is balanced by near-infrared radiation, which activates cytochrome C oxidase in your mitochondria and helps optimize ATP production

Jmho, the decision to stop airline passenger traffic between the USA and EU for 30 days is the correct one. I was surprised the UK wasn't included. Yes, Covid-19 is already here & it probably is in every US state by today. But stopping people traveling to & from Europe cuts off a number of additional potential influx points that could bring more persons here who may be infected. Right now here in the US, we're multiple weeks behind where we need to be, and it's very important to buy time.

Okay, while others are running around looking for a bunker, I'll post some actual news.
  • 30 deaths now in Washington. All but 1 connected to nursing homes, and almost all to the LifeCare Center. All but four were 70 or older. Two in their 50s, one in her 60s, and one in his 40s, all with one or more underlying health conditions.
  • 366 cases in Washington with 3,037 people tested negative. (Clearly they are ramping up testing.)
  • Based on genetic testing, the outbreak on the Grand Princess cruise ship likely came from Washington, and they suspect the person from Wuhan that arrived in Seattle in January 15th likely is the cause of the Washington outbreak. The doctor behind this study says anywhere from 210 to 2800 cases, and probably somewhere in the middle.

This is the stuff that terrifies me. I work in healthcare and am exposed to tons of patients/ family members and staff around the hospital and no one seems concerned about it. This baffles me. We need everyone to pay attention to what is going on.

At least wash your hands as some benefit.

"Just the flu" has become the smart ass response given whenever someone isn't ready to hit the bunker.

From my Friend and Husband living in Italy.

Quote:

Here is the latest from Lockdown Land in Italy.

Total cases of Coronavirus: 10,149
In the last 24 hours: 977
Total deaths: 631
Deaths in the past 24 hours: 168

Something important to mention is that Italy has a much older population. Please don't quote these numbers, but it's my understanding that 99% of the deaths here have been individuals over the age of 60, and 83% over the age of 70. In order to protect our more fragile neighbors, we ALL have to do our part!

We must carry documentation if we have to drive to essential places like work, grocery store, medical appointments because the police are stopping people and you can face up to 3 months in jail or 250 fine. Everything is closed except for those things necessary for survival (commissary and hospital).

My guess is he infected only 1 or 2 people, and it took a long time to spread unlike in Italy where patient zero was roaming all over, delivering food for 4-5 days while sick. The virus had to break out of a single point in Seattle, but popped up all over the place in short order in Italy.

The author of the study also said it is possible the source was someone else who had the virus with the same genetic markers, but that is much less likely.
