If things were like that in Italy, wouldn't some news outlet have a story on that?

I just have a hard time believing posts on the internet.

I'm just saying there are news articles out there saying things are pretty bad, maybe not as dire as the tweets etc though.

This is where we miss serious journalism.

Social media finds any outliers and blast things everywhere.

Nothing has changed since this virus began.

Most cases are mild.

There have been several old smokers or elderly who have high blood pressure or some other health condition that have had major reactions to Coronavirus as they would a great deal of other viruses and illnesses in their state.

Media and social media still leaves all of that out and just states "another Coronavirus death"

There will be a lot of people infected and Twitter will notify us each time it happens.

Benny's field trip next week was canceled because it was on a college campus. They are worried about coronavirus.

I am thinking they should be more worried about kids eating dinner at Panera now, after the True False film festival brought thousands from around the country and world.

These are the posts the bother me. We've been two weeks behind people for weeks now and now we're three weeks behind but have like what? 30 dead in the USA? This thing started in China and we didn't really restrict air travel from China til late in the game.

Sure I'll admit it's a serious thing because the mass cancellations due to the over cautious nature of businesses wanting to avoid lawsuits and bad pr (risk mgmt), but we don't reach Italy's scenario ever in my opinion.

The first confirmed case in Washington was over a month (January 19) before the first confirmed case in Italy (February 20). IMO, Italy is likely bad because it was there spreading and they were blissfully ignorant that it was even in the country.

It really does seem that some people either are 100% negative all the time.

And take out the nursing homes in the Seattle area, and the death toll is around 5 or 6.

We have our own problems here as the only place many people can go for health care is the ER as they lack insurance. ERs will be filled for anything that comes close to COVID-19. Every country has its own unique circumstances, so we'll see how it all plays out.

Assuming the first case in Seattle was responsible for all of the others, there is one big difference.

He was not running all over the place delivering food and interacting with hundreds of people while sick. Patient Zero in Italy did just that so he likely infected a very large number where the guy in Seattle (again, under the assumption he is the source) probably infected less than around 3-5.

I really don't get this mindset. Yeah, most cases are mild. The vast majority are. I figure the final death rate will be 1% max. Check, now what?

Do we ignore it?

Do we explain to everyone how because we're a narcissist and are incapable of thinking about others, and because we won't die from this, it's completely meaningless to us?

Honestly, what do you think the best and worst case scenarios are here?

They didn't say what the reagent was but I'd guess it's phenol-chloroform solution. FDA and CDC are really going to need to get creative about how to process testing without pre-packaged kits.
The Qiagen spokesperson mentioned ramping up on production in Germantown. Is that making phenol or the testing components that phenol is required to make?

Chemistry and biochemistry is not my forte.

The point is that the difference in numbers between Washington and Italy have nothing to do with Washington being behind the curve in terms of time. The fact is that Italy was way behind in terms of response.

It's a phenol-chloroform solution for the RNA extraction that they need, I don't believe there's any further processing involved other than QA batch testing.

Why is Washington behind Italy? We detected first, we put in travel restrictions, have better health care/services, lower number of smokers, less physical contact than Italians, etc.. I can go on and on as to why we will be in a much better situation than Italy.
